Speaking exclusively with FLW, Don Goodman has given his verdict on whether Charlton should sign former West Ham United goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski.
Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman does not believe Charlton Athletic should pursue a deal for former West Ham United goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski.
After beating Leyton Orient 1-0 in the League One play-off final at Wembley last month, Charlton are preparing to return to the Championship for the first time in five years.
It has been a positive start to the summer for the Addicks, with manager Nathan Jones signing a new five-year contract earlier this month to end speculation linking him with a move to Cardiff City, while midfielder Sonny Carey became the club's first new addition of the window when he arrived from Blackpool on a free transfer.
According to journalist Rich Cawley, Charlton were offered the opportunity to make another signing in the form of Fabianski, but Jones decided against the move as he is keen to bring in a younger goalkeeper to rival Will Mannion and Ashley Maynard-Brewer.
After losing his place to Alphonse Areola, Fabianski's game time became increasingly limited during the latter part of his time at the London Stadium, and the 40-year-old is now on the hunt for a new club after being released by the Hammers at the end of his contract this summer, but it appears The Valley will not be his next destination.
Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Goodman insisted that Jones should keep faith with current number one Will Mannion next season in the Championship, and he claimed that if Charlton were to pursue a move for Fabianski, the former Poland international should only be used as a back-up option.
"Lukasz Fabianski to Charlton would be an interesting move," Goodman said.
"Fabianski turned 40 in April, but we've seen before that goalkeepers can go that long. Do they need a goalkeeper? It's debatable, isn't it?
"Will Mannion did ever so well at the back end of the season. He kept clean sheets in all three play-off games, and if you include the last couple of games of the season, he kept clean sheets out of four of the last five games.
"Having started 28 games and kept 12 clean sheets, that is a pretty good ratio, so it would be a bit harsh if he was moved out of the way.
"However, Fabianski could help to bring Mannion and the other goalkeepers at Charlton on, and that could possibly be the reason for signing him, rather than for him to be playing week in, week out."
Fabianski has been a solid goalkeeper in the Premier League for much of his career, so Jones would surely have been tempted by the chance to bring him to Charlton.
Both Mannion and Maynard-Brewer had spells between the sticks last season, which suggests Jones may not be entirely convinced by the pair, and it would be no surprise to see him recruit a new goalkeeper for the Championship.
But as Fabianski is now 40 years of age, he would not be a long-term signing for the Addicks.
As Goodman says, Fabianski could potentially pass on his knowledge to Mannion and Maynard-Brewer, but they are now experienced players themselves at 27 and 25 respectively.
