Liverpool’s Contract Uncertainty Continues Despite Van Dijk and Salah Agreements

Liverpool Football Club find themselves at another crossroads—one that fans may not notice immediately, but insiders certainly do. Behind the scenes, negotiations are unfolding that will shape not only the club’s short-term stability but also its long-term identity. Dave Davis, speaking to Trev Downey on Anfield Index, revealed some surprising details that suggest Liverpool have serious decisions to make on two of their most promising talents: Curtis Jones and Conor Bradley.

As Davis shared: “The info I have got over the last few days surprised me about Jones’ situation.” That statement alone hints at something more than the usual contract haggling.

Curtis Jones and the Cost of Being Local

Curtis Jones has two years remaining on his current contract, but it’s not business as usual. According to Davis, “Curtis Jones has turned down Liverpool’s latest contract offer.” For a player who has grown up at the club, come through the ranks, and is now an England international, that’s a red flag.

“He has just two years left on his contract and he will be the ‘Scouser in the team’ once Trent Alexander-Arnold does leave.” It’s a poignant note. Jones, at just the right age, is supposed to be the heartbeat of the next generation. Yet, he’s looking around the dressing room and seeing Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch, and Dominik Szoboszlai on six-figure salaries.

“So again, he is going to be looking at their deals and thinks he is worth that value,” Davis added. He’s not wrong. Performance-wise, Jones has shown he can mix it with the best, but Liverpool appear to be betting on sentiment instead of putting their money where their mouth is. As Davis said, “I expect that one to get done because he loves Liverpool and wants to stay, but FSG aren’t going to get away with this cheaply.”

Conor Bradley: No Longer the Apprentice

Jones isn’t alone in facing this contractual limbo. Conor Bradley, who could soon step into the vacated role of first-choice right-back, is in a similarly delicate position.

“It’s similar for Conor Bradley, who also has a couple of years left,” said Davis. And it matters more now than ever, especially given Trent Alexander-Arnold’s reported £400,000-per-week rejection. If Trent is preparing for an eventual exit, Liverpool’s reliance on Bradley is not just hopeful—it’s essential.

But the club’s opening gambit was tone-deaf. “The first offer Liverpool made to Conor Bradley was literally laughed at because it was that small.” In football economics, his current wage—reportedly around £10,000-per-week—is paltry. Even doubling that would be “nothing,” as Davis put it bluntly.

“All of the chips are on Bradley’s side of the table and he will want Liverpool to prove that they want him.” And rightly so. If he’s the future of the right-back slot, Liverpool must act like it.

Value, Vision and a Club at a Crossroads

There’s a trend emerging here. For all the talk of data-led decisions and smart recruitment under FSG, the club sometimes underestimates the human side of football. These aren’t just assets on a spreadsheet—they are symbols of the club’s present and future identity.

“At two-years left, you want to avoid all of these situations,” Davis rightly pointed out. Waiting too long can sour relationships, drive down market value, or worse—lead to exits. Just ask fans still lamenting Gini Wijnaldum’s departure.

Jones and Bradley aren’t just homegrown players—they are ambassadors of what Liverpool should represent. And if Arne Slot is to continue his tenure on solid ground, these are precisely the types of players he’ll want to have committed and happy.

Liverpool still expect both contracts to get done. But as Davis made clear, “they won’t get it on the cheap.” Nor should they. Loyalty in football today is rare. When it comes from your own, pay it forward.
