Lee Hendrie has spoken to FLW about Bolton’s interest in Charlton forward Gassan Ahadme.
Sky Sports pundit Lee Hendrie admits that the signing of striker Gassan Ahadme would be a gamble for Bolton Wanderers to take after his low goal tally at Charlton Athletic.
Bolton will be looking to bounce back in League One this weekend when they host Plymouth Argyle after starting off their campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Stockport County.
Steven Schumacher’s men also finished last season in dismal fashion as a run of six games without a win, including four defeats, saw the club fail to reach the play-offs, so the pressure is on to respond and get up the table as quickly as possible.
One way that could be achieved is through successful recruitment for the remainder of the summer transfer window, with clubs able to sign players up until the 1st September deadline.
Wanderers are still in the market for a new forward, and have recently been touted to make a fresh move for Charlton Athletic forward Gassan Ahadme as talks with Celtic’s Jonny Kenny stalled.
With this news in mind, Lee Hendrie has spoken to FLW about whether Bolton’s move for Ahadme could transform their fortunes after a slow start to the new campaign.
Speaking exclusively to Football League World, ex-Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie has questioned whether Gassan Ahadme can provide enough goals to contribute towards a promotion push for Bolton Wanderers, after the Moroccan netted just once from 19 appearances in the third-tier last season.
Hendrie said: “It’s a tricky one. I can’t say I’ve seen a awful lot of this player at all.
“I know that Bolton are looking for a striker and have obviously looked at his background and the potential he has. I remember that season at Cambridge where he scored goals, but since he’s been at Charlton it’s been four goals in 23 appearances last season.
“Is he the type of player Bolton are looking at? Is it his style? Is it his presence that might work?
“They’ve obviously looked at it and felt like he’s got potential at 24 years of age, and maybe he just hasn’t fitted into the style of play that Charlton have.
“It’s one where you don’t know too much about, and it can be a gamble, but sometimes they pay off and this could well be the case.”
Steven Schumacher has insisted that Bolton have to go in for the "right player" when it comes to a goalscorer, and with just a couple of weeks until Sam Dalby is set to return from injury, they don't need to rush into any deals that could waste precious financial resources.
Gassan Ahadme is certainly someone who hasn’t proven that he can score enough goals for a promotion-contending side, while Mason Burstow had an encouraging debut despite defeat at Stockport, so it's not all doom and gloom when it comes to their attacking options.
If Bolton are to take the step of adding to the forward department, then it must be someone who has more of a track record of regular goalscoring at League One level.
The last thing the club needs is another player to take a wage that can’t consistently find the back of the net, so this deal must be avoided at all costs.
