Jamie Carragher had scary words for Chelsea fans last week after the Blues were battered by Brighton.
He warned that players like Cole Palmer wouldn’t wait around forever for a project that was eternally just trying to get into the Champions League.
That was followed by rumours that Palmer actually has a release clause in the contract he signed back in August. The Daily Mail’s Chelsea Confidential column written by Kieran Gill had some interesting insight on this front to offer:
“Confidential can confirm there is no release clause relating to Europe’s elite competition in his contract. Nor do Chelsea intend to entertain offers for the 22-year-old Englishman.”
Well, that’s a relief. The atmosphere at the club is already pretty sour, and at times Palmer is the one shining light that keeps things going.

A clause would obviously make things very difficult indeed for Chelsea, but even without one we’re not out of the woods. As Carragher said, clause or no clause, if Palmer feels his best years are being wasted at a club and wants to go, he will start pushing for it, teams will start offering, and things get very sticky indeed if we force him to stay.
This is the flaw with the strategy of long contracts that Chelsea give out under this new ownership Technically you could keep the player for that period against their will, but you’d only be hurting their value and your team as they’re not going to perform well if they’re not happy.
So really, if Palmer wants to go and starts pushing for it, there’s only so much we can do. Let’s just pray it doesn’t come to that. All we need to do it start winning, and start challenging for trophies.
