Sky Sports pundit Lee Hendrie expects Plymouth Argyle to follow the Miron Muslic model in the search for his replacement.

Lee Hendrie believes that Plymouth Argyle won't be looking at the "usual candidates" such as Ruben Selles, Des Buckingham, and Rob Edwards to replace Schalke-bound Miron Muslic.

The news that Argyle fans had feared this summer came on Wednesday evening, as world-renowned football journalist Fabrizio Romano reported that Bundesliga 2 side, Schalke 04, had triggered Muslic's release clause.

An official statement from the Pilgrims shortly followed, confirming the reports from earlier in the day to be true.

It was later revealed that Plymouth would receive an £840k compensation package for the Bosnian-Austrian boss.

The disappointment at the nature of Muslic's imminent departure was clear, as the Devon side said they had "received repeated verbal promises from Miron that he was committed to Argyle."

His departure to the German side was confirmed early on Saturday morning, with a short statement from the club summarising his time, and wishing him well in his future endeavors.

Now, just under five months into what felt like a new dawn at Home Park despite relegation, the Plymouth hierarchy have the tough job of finding a replacement for the 42-year-old.

In the wake of the news regarding Muslic's departure, Football League World spoke exclusively to former Aston Villa midfielder turned Sky Sports pundit Hendrie, asking him where he thinks Argyle will look for their next head coach.

"The obvious candidates will come into play; Ruben Selles, Des Buckingham, they're the obvious choices that you'd be looking at," Hendrie said.

"I think where they went with Muslic, I just feel they'll go and maybe look elsewhere. When he came in, he came from the unknown. Not many people knew an awful lot about him.

"It looked and felt that he was appropriate to take the club forward, so it wouldn't surprise me if they [Plymouth] go away from the managers that have been around League One [and the] Championship.

"I just think they'll probably look more on a wider scale - that'll be their model.

"Obviously, the likes of Rob Edwards will always come into the equation. The usual candidates are actually available at the moment, but I said they'd be waiting for something a little bit bigger.

"That's why I think it'll either be an up-and-coming young manager that they'll possibly have a gamble with, or they possibly do something similar to what they did when they brought him [Muslic]," the former Aston Villa star concluded.

Saturday's confirmation of Muslic's expected departure really rammed home a feeling of 'what could've been' in terms of the 42-year-old's stay at Home Park.

Whilst he didn't manage to keep the Greens up, he galvanized the fanbase and had the club in a good place ahead of next season's potential promotion push in League One.

To leave it all behind after communicating his loyalties to the club has rightly left a very sour taste in everyone connected with Argyle's mouth, and it's disappointing considering that the foundations to bounce back to the Championship were already in place.

However, Plymouth must swiftly move on from this setback and identify the man who can continue to build upon the foundations that Muslic has left behind.

Whilst it took some time for the former Pilgrims boss to implement his style and philosophies, it was clear by the end of the season that the Argyle hierarchy had found the right man, and they would want to do that again.

With that in mind, Hendrie is likely correct that the Devon-based side could turn to the rest of Europe again for their next head coach, and won't be keen on appointing someone from the merry-go-round of available EFL managers.
