According to Dan Marsh of The Mirror via X, the Lions have been taking a look at the 32-year-old during the early stages of the summer window.

Luongo has been training with Alex Neil’s side since leaving Ipswich last month, and there is a serious chance that he is signed permanently.

The Australian international has a wealth of Championship experience, having operated out of the division for the Tractor Boys, QPR and Sheffield Wednesday across the last decade.

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Sky Sports pundit and former EFL striker Don Goodman, thinks that the move would be a solid one for both parties.

“I could see Massimo Luongo being a great fit at Millwall,” exclaimed Goodman. “I could see that being a good move.

“When you go back to Luongo's last Championship season, he was an instrumental part in Ipswich's wonderful success and the season before that, it was the same again, when him and Sam Morsy created a brilliant partnership in Kieran McKenna’s midfield.

“He’s got a wealth of experience at Championship level and would be a good addition for Millwall, who on the back of last season's excellent end, will be hoping that they can progress a little bit more.

“If they can make that progression, they're going to be in and around it next year.”

Massimo Luongo could solve Millwall’s midfield problems

Millwall’s appointment of Neil proved to be a resounding success last season, with his management style instantly gelling with the Lions’ supporters.

The 44-year-old was defeated just nine times during his 26 games in charge of the club in the 2024/25 campaign, finishing two points shy of Bristol City in sixth.

However, the Scotsman currently has a conundrum to solve at the Den.

Earlier this summer, George Saville and George Honeyman both exited the club, which removed two solid options from Millwall’s midfield ranks.

It won’t be easy to replace these players, especially for an outfit such as the Lions who don’t enjoy a huge budget when compared to other sides in the division.

Therefore, taking Luongo on a free makes perfect sense for Millwall.

The absence of a transfer fee would allow them to recruit another quality option in midfield, instead of having to spread their budget thinly.

Furthermore, the fact that Neil has been able to watch him up close during pre-season will allow the Scotsman to get a proper feel of Luongo and fully assess whether he is worth signing.

With the transfer window often so hectic, this deal seems like quite a simple and straightforward one for both parties.
