It's set to be a busy final few days of the summer transfer window on Teesside.

Boro are finalising a £1.5m deal to sign Lausanne striker Kaly Sene, whilst attacking midfielder Finn Azaz is heading for Southampton in a deal worth at least £12m.

However, Middlesbrough could be set to potentially do their biggest piece of business in the history of the club, and it's one that will break the hearts of Teessiders everywhere.

Wolves table £30m package for Middlesbrough star Hayden Hackney

Football League World has exclusively been informed that Wolves have made a £20m bid, potentially rising to £30m, for Middlesbrough's midfield maestro Hayden Hackney.

This has been a situation that has threatened to become reality throughout the summer for Boro, with word of the exploits of their 23-year-old academy graduate no longer a well-kept secret.

West Ham United and Everton have been two of the most recent clubs to have been linked with a move for Hackney, whilst Crystal Palace, Manchester United, Liverpool, Spurs and Newcastle United have all been mooted as being potential suitors for him in the past too.

Indeed, the box-to-box midfielder has already snubbed what would've been a Championship-record £20m move to Ipswich Town earlier this summer, and by doing so, hinted at what his transfer stance could be.

However, that became abundantly clear this week, when it was revealed that Boro's number seven had informed the club that it was his desire to move to the Premier League if a top-flight offer arrived before the 7pm deadline on 1 September.

Middlesbrough are understood to have deemed Hackney as being not for sale in these final days of the window, but a potential £30m package would set a new club-record for their highest ever transfer fee received, which was set by Emmanuel Latte Lath's £22.5m move to Atlanta United in February of this year.

Therefore, this kind of offer, which FLW has been informed has blown all other offers out of the water for him, could prove very hard to turn down.

Hayden Hackney has earned Premier League chance - Middlesbrough's promotion credentials would take big hit

It's safe to assume that there isn't a single Middlesbrough fan who would deny that Hackney has earned his chance to make the step-up to Premier League football.

The England youth international came from the relative fringes of Boro's academy system and into the first-team picture in October 2022, and ever since then, Boro supporters have been fearing the day their visions of a starting XI without him in it would arrive.

Should he call time on his Middlesbrough career in the coming days, then he will go with the blessings of everyone on Teesside, but it will leave Rob Edwards and his team with a huge void to fill in the middle of the park.

He and Aidan Morris have formed arguably the best midfield partnership in the Championship, and whilst new additions in the form of Abdoulaye Kante and Sverre Nypan look very exciting indeed, they are both just 20 and 18 respectively.

Whether this would force Middlesbrough back into the market to make another late addition in central midfield, or whether they'll place their faith in their young crop of in-house options there will remain to be seen, but even if they did make another signing, replacing a player of Hackney's quality and importance would be virtually impossible at this late stage regardless.

Therefore, Boro are facing a very tough decision here, one that won't be envied by anyone.

On the one hand, they'll bank a potentially record fee, that will all be registered as pure profit in regards to PSR given he's an academy graduate.

On the other, they will know that by selling him at this stage of the window, they will be inflicting a serious a dent to their Premier League promotion credentials.
