Emile Heskey believes Emmanuel Latte Lath can help replace the impending loss of Liam Delap if a move to the Championship surfaces.
Former Aston Villa and Birmingham City striker Emile Heskey has backed ex-Middlesbrough forward Emmanuel Latte Lath to fill the hole left by Liam Delap’s impending exit from Portman Road.
The Tractor Boys will be making early preparations for their return to the second tier after their relegation from the Premier League was confirmed at the end of April.
The Norfolk-based outfit endured a miserable return to the big time. Failing to bridge the gap between second tier sides and the established top-flight clubs, Kieran McKenna’s men have only collected 22 points as they bring the curtain down on the term.
Ipswich know that they will be expected to leapfrog straight back to the Premier League due to the superior financial resources they possess, although a successful summer transfer window will be imperative for the club to compete towards the top end of the table.
It hasn’t been made any easier given star striker Liam Delap is expected to complete his move to Chelsea for a reported £30 million, but Ipswich will have significant funds to replace him.
One man touted for a move back to the Championship is Emmanuel Latte Lath, who currently plays his football for MLS side Atlanta United.
According to the Northern Echo, the Ivorian is one of the targets on Ipswich’s shortlist to replace Delap, who only moved across to the US for £22.5 million in February.
With this in mind, Heskey has reflected on whether Latte Lath will be able to deliver an instant promotion push back to the top-flight should he make the move back to England.
Speaking exclusively to Football League World (via Poker Scout), Emile Heskey believes Emmanuel Latte Lath will be able to shine in an Ipswich Town team that creates bundles of opportunities.
Asked whether Latte Lath would be a suitable replacement for Delap, Heskey said: “That’s a tough one because Liam Delap has done fantastic. Coming through at Derby and then Man City, that generation of players, we’ve seen a lot of them like Morgan Rogers at Aston Villa, who are coming through and showing their worth.
“It’s difficult to say whether he (Latte Lath) will match what Delap has done, but it’s in the Championship, so it’s a little bit different.
“You pin your hopes on that with the way Ipswich play, if you present chances, and they do, then the striker will score.”
Emmanuel Latte Lath showcased what he was all about in the Championship, which ultimately led to his move over to the States.
His ruthless edge in front of goal was on show for all to see, recording 16 goals in 30 appearances in his debut season and notching 11 from 29 games this term before his exit during the winter transfer window.
Knowing where the back of the net is on a regular basis, Latte Lath could thrive in an Ipswich team that is likely to be a dominant force in the Championship, with the Tractor Boys expected to boss possession and create numerous opportunities for the forward line per game.
Ipswich will want someone with proven experience in the Championship to finish those chances off, and Latte Lath could be the ideal replacement to push Kieran McKenna’s men towards the top end of the Championship table and build on the goals he has already scored in the second tier for a much more offensively potent side.
