It’s still April and there are still some very important games still to play, but it seems silly season is starting early.
Today we hear reports from CaughtOffside that Arsenal are going to try and sign our rising star midfielder Andrey Santos after his superb season on loan with Strasbourg. The midfielder did cast a little doubt over his future when asked about it a couple of months ago, and the transfer news site said a “fee in the region of €45-50m” could be enough to sign him this summer.
It sounds preposterous, especially at that price – we can’t imagine we’d sell him for less than €100m given his talent and potential. If we’re paying that much for the likes of Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo, why would we accept half that for a player we’ve done really well to scout, secure and develop ourselves?

We don’t believe for a second that Chelsea would sell Santos, least of all to Arsenal. But are we really 100% sure he will be part of our first team squad next season? This time a year ago we’d have been pretty sure he was going to join up with Enzo Maresca’s group, especially after he had preseason with them, but the club surprised everyone by sending him for another year on loan.
That’s just a reminder you can never quite predict what’s going on in the heads of those making the decisions. CaughtOffside also aren’t the first source to report on a potential sale of the midfielder. Both Milan teams and Monaco were linked less than a month ago.
So while we’re happy to say we’re 90% sure he will be at Chelsea next season, we’d be lying if we said we’re 100% sure.
