Charlton Athletic striker Daniel Kanu is in talks with AFC Wimbledon over a loan move, FLW understands.
Charlton Athletic striker Daniel Kanu is in talks to join AFC Wimbledon on loan, Football League World has exclusively been informed.
Nathan Jones is retooling his Charlton playing squad this summer ahead of their first season back in the Championship next term, after spending the last five campaigns in League One.
AFC Wimbledon, on the other hand, are preparing for life back at third tier level for the 25/26 season, having won promotion via a play-off final victory over Walsall.
Football League World has exclusively been informed that Charlton striker Daniel Kanu is in talks with AFC Wimbledon over a potential loan switch to the Dons.
The 20-year-old centre-forward has been with the Addicks since Under-11 level, and signed his first professional contract with the club back in February 2022.
A Sierra Leone international, Kanu bagged 41 goals in the 21/22 season as a first-year scholar, and eventually made his first-team debut in February 2022, shortly after he penned his first professional contract at The Valley.
The 23/24 season was the year he really announced himself to the Charlton faithful, making 34 total appearances and bagging seven goals in the process, whilst also spending a brief loan spell with National League side Southend United, where he netted four times in six appearances.
As a result of his breakthrough campaign, Kanu signed a new long-term extension with the Addicks in February 2024, signing on at The Valley until 2027.
The young forward would then make 20 total appearances for Charlton last term, with 17 of those coming in League One, scoring just the once.
Despite winning promotion to League One last term, Wimbledon's success was largely built upon their watertight defence, rather than their attack.
Indeed, Johnnie Jackson's side conceded just 35 times in the league in 24/25, the lowest number of any team in the division last year.
On the flip side, they scored just 56 goals, which was the lowest amount of any of the top seven sides in the division last term, with Mathew Stevens bagging 17 of those himself.
As such, the Dons will need to sharpen their cutting edge significantly this summer if they are to have a sufficient amount of firepower in order to survive in League One next season.
Kanu has shown signs that he can score goals at that level, having hit six in 30 for Charlton in 23/24, which may not be a return that jumps off the page, but considering his age and inexperience at the time, those numbers should point towards the potential he has to be a real contributor for a team like Wimbledon.
Therefore, the Dons could surely do worse than to take a punt on a young and exciting centre-forward like Kanu this summer, as they look to give a strong account of themselves in the third tier next term.
