Lee Hendrie has told FLW his verdict on Birmingham City's potential deal to sign Tommy Doyle on loan
Lee Hendrie believes Birmingham City are signing a fantastic player in Tommy Doyle should their loan deal go through with Wolves.
It was exclusively revealed by FLW that the Blues are set to win the race to the 23-year-old’s signature this summer.
The midfielder is set to make the switch to St. Andrew’s on loan, with an option to buy at the end of the year.
Doyle featured 24 times in the Premier League last season, but has fallen down the pecking order at Molineux following the arrival of Vitor Pereria as manager.
Hendrie is excited by the prospect of Doyle signing for Birmingham this summer, praising the player’s ability in midfield.
He has called the deal a statement of intent from the Blues, as they look to immediately compete at the top end of the table following their promotion from League One.
“I know he didn’t get as much game time as he would’ve expected and wanted, but really like what he brings to the side,” Hendrie exclusively told Football League World.
“I think that he’s one of them players that can sit and hold.
“His vision, his awareness, his passing ability is very good as a holding defensive midfielder, and he can go and join in as well.
“I think this would be a real big statement if they were to get the loan over the line, and with an option to buy included.
“Quite fantastic for the football club.
“Very, very good player, if this deal does certainly materialise and happen.”
Birmingham are back in the Championship after just one year in the third tier, with Chris Davies leading the side to a record points tally of 111 on their way to the title last season.
Doyle, who earns an estimated £10k-a-week at Wolves, has proven he is a Premier League calibre player during his time with Wolves, even if he has fallen out of favour under Pereira.
If Birmingham can get this deal over the line then it’s a move with a lot of potential for Davies’ side.
They already have a strong midfield pair from last season, so this will really increase competition for game time.
Birmingham are showing this summer that they mean business and want to contend for promotion straight away this season, and it’s signings like the potential arrival of Doyle that will have fans very excited for the upcoming campaign.
