Former Inter Milan defender Andrea Ranocchia feels that Napoli coach Antonio Conte has been “self-serving” with his comments on VAR.

Ranocchia spoke about the Partenopei boss’s remarks on Italian broadcaster SportMediaset, via FCInter1908.

Yesterday evening, Conte went on one of his trademark angry post-match rants.

This came about because of a penalty that was awarded to Inter in the second half of a top of the table Serie A clash with his Napoli side.

The penalty did not ended up affecting the result. Hakan Calhanoglu missed the ensuing kick, the first time that he has ever missed from the spot for Inter.

Napoli coach Conte will certainly feel that this was a measure of justice.

The former Inter, Chelsea, and Juventus coach was absolutely furious in his post-match comments.

Conte made clear that he felt that it was a serious error to award a penalty for a relatively light contact by midfielder Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa on wingback Denzel Dumfries.

The crux of Conte’s remarks was that VAR should have intervened to rule out the penalty.

Ranocchia Lambasts “Self-Serving” Conte Comments On VAR

Former Inter defender Ranocchia admitted that “I’d have been a bit mad if they gave a penalty against me for something like that.”

Furthermore, Ranocchia continued “But we’ve gotten to the point where VAR looks at every centimetre. So you have to be careful about that.”

“You can’t put a challenge in, and that limits the defender,” Ranocchia said.

But he noted that “There’s certainly contact there, whether or not it’s enough to bring the player down.”

As far as Conte’s comments about the decision, Ranocchia said that “Everyone just says what’s self-serving to them.”

“The problem is if VAR just gives everything as a penalty,” he added.

In conclusion Ranocchia stated: “To me, it has to be a serious contact, otherwise defenders aren’t able to make challenges.”
