Sommer was in the starting eleven for Inter yet again yesterday.

So far this season, the Swiss has played every single minute for the Nerazzurri.

Sommer had certainly made the starting spot his own when he joined in the summer ahead of last season.

And the former Bayern Munich and Borussia Monchengladbach justified his place in the team. His saves played their part in Inter’s Serie A title triumph.

But given that Sommer is in his mid-thirties it is natural that there has been a bit of speculation about how much longer he will be the starter for Inter.

The Nerazzurri signed Josep Martinez from Genoa over the summer. The Spaniard is the player who they have earmarked as the eventual successor to Sommer in goal.

And meanwhile, playing for Venezia yesterday was Inter-owned goalkeeper Filip Stankovic. The Serb is currently on loan at the Lagunari.

During the week, there were some reports that Martinez could potentially get his first start for Inter.

It’s only a matter of time before the former RB Leipzig keeper gets his chance.

And with so many matches, Inter coach Simone Inzaghi is thinking about squad rotation.

And adding further pressure to Sommer’s place, Stankovic had an outstanding match for Venezia yesterday evening.

The 22-year-old’s display was vital for keeping the newly-promoted team in contention as Inter pushed in attack throughout the match.

However, at the other end, Sommer’s saves were just as important.

The 35-year-old produced a couple outstanding stops on the likes of Joel Pohjanpalo and Gaetano Oristanio.

Sommer may not be Inter’s starting goalkeeper forever.

But the veteran keeper made clear with his display yesterday that he’s not going anywhere soon.
