England smashed through Jamaica in their final preparation game for Euro 2025 and following the emphatic win, Sarina Wiegman gave some key insights ahead of the tournament.
The Lionesses made an emphatic appearance in their last game before jetting off to Switzerland for the Euros this year and with their first match of the tournament coming as soon as Saturday, they look raring to go.
Every England star played at the highest level against Jamaica, as they looked to secure a spot in Sarina Wiegman’s starting lineup for Euro 2025. However the manager was keen not to give too much away ahead of the championship that gets underway this week.
Although the Lionesses looked seriously impressive against Jamaica, it was clear that Sarina Wiegman didn’t want to get carried away against a team ranked 40th in the FIFA standings.
“I thought it was a good performance,” said Wiegman. “We expected that we would be in the final third a lot, so we wanted to show what we could go there. Of course, we scored seven goals. That’s really nice. And still, we thought we could do a little bit better at some moments, get a little more composure and make an extra pause.
“But overall, I’m really happy with the performance. We know that Jamaica didn’t have all their best players, so they were struggling a little bit. But still, you have to do it yourself.”
Despite not getting too carried away with the performance, the England boss did seem confident in the squad’s potential ahead of what should be a difficult campaign in Group D.
“I’ve been involved in many tournaments now, things develop in the tournament. You have to be prepared. You have to adapt to what you have in front of you and see what happens and make big decisions. I think there is huge potential in this squad and we have many options.”
Wiegman has arguably the most squad depth in a team at this summer’s tournament and the Lionesses are just 3/1 to win Euro 2025 according to the best UK betting sites.
One player who could be anything this summer is Lauren James, who is set to make her Euros debut in Switzerland after recovering from a hamstring injury.
James featured off the bench for England against Jamaica and she was teased in a new role after coming on in the 10 role.
“We have many players that can play in the ten position. Jess Park has played there, Grace Clinton can play there, Ella Toone plays there, and now LJ is coming back, she could play up front, but you can also play in the ten role.”
The Chelsea star replaced Toone, who scored a brace, after an hour on Sunday and James looked to have no injury concerns as she dictated play for the final half an hour.
It is still unknown where on the pitch James will feature at Euro 2025 but the 23-year-old is sure to ignite the England spark wherever she plays and after a good performance against Jamaica, Sarina Wiegman will certainly have some pleasant selection headaches.
