Thursday marks deadline day for Women’s Super League clubs as the start of the 2023/24 season approaches.
With time running out to make signings, here’s a rundown of every team’s summer business so far.
Plenty has been done to revamp things at Arsenal at the back and the front. Defenders Laia Codina (who won the World Cup with Spain) and Amanda Ilestedt (who starred for Sweden) have come in to make up for the departed Rafaelle and the injured Leah Williamson.
Further forward, depth has been added after injuries saw the team struggle last season. Alessia Russo has arrived on a free from Manchester United with Cloé Lacasse, who can play across the frontline, coming in from Benfica after scoring for fun in Portugal.
After the success of bringing English forward Rachel Daly back to these shores from the NWSL, Villa are looking to repeat the trick with Ebony Salmon, who arrives from Houston Dash and will be hoping to impress Sarina Wiegman.
Villa lost goalkeeper Hannah Hampton to Chelsea but have impressively replaced her with Dutch international Daphne van Domselaar and loanees from last season (Anna Patten and Kirsty Hanson) have earned permanent moves.
Brighton have added huge experience at the highest level with Vicky Losada and Pauline Bremer arriving. The pair have a combined 76 Women’s Champions League appearances and won the competition three times between them.
A goal threat from midfield has been added in Tatiana Pinto too, with the Portugal international arriving despite links with a move to PSG.
“We can’t rely on buying, spending, having everything all the time,” manager Lauren Smith said after Bristol City secured promotion. “We have to do it differently, and we have to ensure that the people who are doing it with us are thinking of it the same. And we’ve done a lot of that to get to this point.
“We want to make it happen with some of the players that aren’t getting minutes at the top clubs in the WSL.
“I enjoy that situation because the loanees are really hungry. They want to prove not only to the club that has loaned them out that they’re good enough but stepping into a new team, they go above and beyond.”
Megan Connolly has arrived and adds plenty of experience in midfield after five top flight seasons with Brighton, while goalkeeper Kaylan Marckese arrives on loan from Arsenal and Brooke Aspin remains on loan after sealing a permanent move away from the club to sign for Chelsea.
Another summer and Chelsea have added more stars to their squad. The exits of Magdalena Eriksson and Pernille Harder (both to Bayern Munich) always meant there would be significant additions and Emma Hayes’s side have managed to sign Ashley Lawrence (PSG) and Catarina Macario (Lyon) to add some real quality in defence and midfield.
Hannah Hampton also arrives with an eye on the number one shirt, while Sjoeke NĂĽsken is a huge midfield talent and will be hoping for chances to play after joining from Frankfurt.
Goalkeeper Emily Ramsey joins permanently from Manchester United after a strong loan spell and the addition of Justine Vanhaevermaet will add presence in midfield. The big hope, though is that Martina Piemonte can fire the Toffees up the table after scoring 13 league goals for Milan last season.
Loan signings made in January saved Leicester from relegation and the Foxes prioritised making those deals permanent, so goalkeeping revelation Janina Leitzig and Courtney Nevin are now at the club on permanent deals.
Aimee Palmer (Bristol City) and Janice Cayman (Lyon) bolster the midfield, Julie Thibaud looks like a fantastic pick up at centre-back and there is hope that promising young forwards Deanna Rose and Jutta Rantala can develop at the club after arriving.
More goals is the order of the day at Liverpool, who welcome back Ireland striker Leanna Kiernan from injury but have still moved to add Sophie Román Haug and Natasha Flint as well. Leanne Kiernan back from injury too. Haug netted a hat-trick at this summer’s World Cup and has eight goals in 11 appearances for Norway.
In defence, the impressive Grace Fisk arrives from West Ham.
It’s been a relatively quiet summer at Manchester City, with Hayley Raso leaving and the club sealing the impressive capture of Jill Roord from Wolfsburg. A huge goal threat from midfield, the former Arsenal star was also linked with Barcelona and should add some more variety to City’s attacking play with her late movement into the box.
There have been big exits and then big incomings too at Manchester United. Ona Battle (Barcelona) and Alessia Russo (Arsenal) have both departed after playing huge roles in recent campaigns.
Above all else, United have reacted by adding to their frontline, signing World Cup Golden Boot winner Hinata Miyazawa and Brazil forward Geyse from Barcelona. Young defender Evie Rabjohn joins from Aston Villa and is one for the future.
There hasn’t been too much change at Tottenham, where the WSL’s all-time record appearance holder Kerys Harrop has retired and Kyah Simon has left.
In terms of arrivals, Spurs have a new goalkeeper in Barbora VotĂková, have signed defender Luana BĂĽhler from Hoffenheim and added Finnish midfielder Olga Ahtinen.
West Ham will look pretty different this season following the departures of Grace Fisk (Liverpool) and Kate Longhurst (Charlton). The pair made a combined 138 WSL appearances for the club over the past four seasons.
