Hansi Flick made clear that he was less than impressed with referee Szymon Marciniak during Barcelona’s 4-3 [7-6 agg] defeat to Inter Milan on Tuesday.

Barça, having found themselves trailing by a two-goal margin at the break, fought back well in a thrilling second half at San Siro and looked destined to reach the UEFA Champions League final when Raphinha put the Blaugrana ahead in the 87th minute – only for 37-year-old Francesco Acerbi to force a period of extra time when he equalised deep into stoppage time.

Davide Frattesi found the winner inside additional time, sparking Hansi Flick to recognise that Inter “did a great job” to qualify for the UEFA Champions League final, where they’ll face either Arsenal or PSG at Munich’s Allianz Arena on May 31.

“I want to wish Inter luck for the final in Munich,” Flick told reporters in his post-match press conference. “They did a great job. They’re a great team.”

But the German boss wasn’t too pleased with the role Szymon Marciniak played in the semi-final, and though he acknowledged that “we have to accept the decisions,” Flick lambasted the Polish referee’s contributions.

“I don’t want to speak too much about the referee but every 50-50 decision he took went their way,” he insisted.

Defeat in front of more than 75,000 fans at the San Siro brings Barça’s hopes of a quadruple to a close, though they could still complete a domestic treble if they defend their four-point lead in LaLiga.

“We’re a young team,” Flick highlighted, “and this team needs to mature. We’re working towards that. We can improve in defence and in other areas.”

“We’ll continue to fight this season, and next season,” the 60-year-old assured fans in the wake of the loss in Italy, adding that “this game is over, but we’re looking forward because we’ve got the Clásico coming up.”

Barcelona could effectively wrap up their LaLiga title with a win against Real Madrid on Sunday at 15:15 BST [16:15 CEST], though their league victory cannot be mathematically confirmed until their match against RCD Espanyol on Thursday 15 May.
