Football Insider reports that The Friedkin Group are putting plans in place to sell the women’s team after filing official documents with Companies House.

It has been revealed that a new company – EFCW Holdings Company Ltd – has been incorporated and is registered at Goodison Park.

Everton’s men’s side was previously docked eight points after breaching PSR rules, which state that Premier League clubs are only allowed to make £105m worth of losses over a rolling three-year period.

Why are Everton considering selling their women’s team?

A football finance expert has told Football Insider that Everton could sell their women’s team to avoid facing PSR issues in the future.

Finance expert Stefan Borson suggests the club is preparing a “rip cord” to pull in case of financial strain.

He said: “In a scenario where something goes wrong, either you finish lower than you expected or you end up spending more than you wanted to on a signing or whatever it is, you want that rip cord and the availability of it.”

By selling the team to a related entity like EFCW Holding, Everton can record a profit. This will bolster their chances of complying with PSR.

What other clubs have sold their WSL team?

Everton could follow in the footsteps of Chelsea and Aston Villa if they sell their women’s team.

Chelsea sold their women’s team to the club’s holding company for £198.7m. An 8% stake was also sold to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian.

However, the Premier League is still assessing the sale’s “fair market value” under its associated-party transaction rules, and the valuation has not been fully approved.

Aston Villa followed, agreeing a deal to sell 90% of the women’s team to the club’s own parent company, V Sports. The remaining 10% is being sold to prominent American investors.

The sale of Aston Villa’s women’s team is reportedly worth £55m.

How did Everton do in the 2024-25 WSL season?

Everton Women finished eighth in the 2024-25 WSL in what was their eighth consecutive top-flight campaign.

The Toffees have been a mid-table side in the WSL, struggling to break into the top-five in the league.

Notable results in the 2024-25 season included a 1-0 victory over rivals Liverpool and 2-1 triumph over Manchester City.

However, they failed to win 16 out of their 22 games, with ten defeats throughout the WSL campaign.

The Toffees have made three summer signings so far, with the latest addition being Japanese defender Rion Ishikawa.

Everton have also signed Dutch midfielder Rosa van Gool and Spanish winger Ornella Vignola.
