Everton continued their mini-unbeaten run with a 0-0 draw against Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday evening.

After losing their opening four games of the season, the Toffees have now taken five points from their last three games to climb to 16th. However, they have Jordan Pickford to thank tonight after the former Sunderland man saved a penalty from former Everton winger Anthony Gordon, who found out exactly how his old fans feel about him.

Everton could have had a penalty of their own when Dan Burn brought down Dominic Calvert-Lewin, but VAR ruled that Calvert-Lewin kicked Burn as he attempted to take a shot.

They were the standout moments in what was a closely-fought affair ultimately short on too much goalmouth action.

The point leaves Newcastle sixth with just one defeat from seven games so far.

Everton player ratings

  1. Jordan Pickford: 86%

Won’t have to pay for any drinks if he decides to go out in Liverpool tonight after saving a penalty from former Everton forward Anthony Gordon. Made three saves to preserve his first clean sheet in the league this season.

  1. James Garner: 61%

As he has done in the past, filled in at full-back due to injury problems for Everton. Did a great job, too, with a match-high four successful tackles at an 80% completion rate, while he made two clearances, two interceptions and 11 recoveries. Won six of nine ground duels, but failed to hit the mark with either of his attempted crosses.

  1. James Tarkowski: 70%

One of the top-performing centre-backs this gameweek so far after posting a 100% success rate on aerial duels and winning six of his seven ground duels, alongside 10 clearances, four tackles and two blocks. All that made up for giving away a penalty.

  1. Michael Keane: 70%

Earns the same score as Tarkowski thanks to keeping everything simple but effective. Made nine clearances and two interceptions, while completing 91% of his passes with just three of 33 going astray.

  1. Ashley Young: 59%

Only completed 73% of his passes, including just two of seven long passes. Did a reasonable job defensively with three clearances, an interception and one successful tackle from two attempts.

  1. Abdoulaye Doucoure: 63%

Provided plenty of dynamism in the midfield for Everton with three chances created and eight passes into the final third. Chipped in defensively, too, with three tackles (two successful) and eight recoveries. Didn’t manage any shots despite being one of Everton’s most potent attackers in recent years.

  1. Orel Mangala: 45%

Misplaced just one pass but only had 24 touches of the ball. Got through plenty of running without truly affecting the game before he was brought off in the 57th minute.

  1. Jack Harrison: 50%

Failed to create a chance or attempt a shot, while he had just three touches in the opposition box and completed one of three attempted dribbles. Harrison was more focused on helping Garner defend on the right, but it was a disappointing night for him nonetheless.

  1. Dwight McNeil: 54%

McNeil has been on a nice run of form recently and while this was a little step down from his standards over the last couple of games, he still managed to create two chances, attempt two shots and complete both his attempted dribbles. Looked tired toward the end.

  1. Iliman Ndiaye: 51%

Would surely have boosted his score had he managed to create some chances or get a couple of shots on goal. However, Ndiaye looks a real livewire for Everton, completing a match-high five dribbles from 10 attempted, keeping Newcastle’s defenders busy. Made a goalline clearance and won both his contested aerial duels.

  1. Dominic Calvert-Lewin: 47%

Perhaps unlucky not to get a penalty after being brought down in the box by Dan Burn, with VAR judging that it was Calvert-Lewin swinging for the ball rather than being tripped. Lost 13 of his contested 18 duels in the air and on the ground combined but did his best to ruffle a few Newcastle feathers. Perhaps should have scored with an effort in the second half rated at 0.52 xGOT.

Newcastle United player ratings

  1. Nick Pope: 69%

Not tested as often as Pickford but still made a couple of good saves to keep his clean sheet.

  1. Kieran Trippier: 62%

Had 92 touches of the ball while providing three successful crosses at a 60% completion rate. Trippier was dribbled past five times, while he lost eight of his 12 total contested duels.

  1. Fabian Schar: 65%

Always looked to move Newcastle forward, playing 11 passes into the final third. Failed to win either of his two tackles and lost three out of four aerial duels.

  1. Dan Burn: 73%

Virgil van Dijk and Caleb Okoli are the only centre-backs to outperform Burn so far this weekend. The 32-year-old won six of nine contested aerial duels and both of his ground duels, while completing a match-high 73 passes. However, his rating would have plummeted had VAR given the penalty for his challenge on Calvert-Lewin.

  1. Lewis Hall: 67%

The second-highest performing left-back this gameweek so far, Hall played seven passes into the final third and created one chance, alongside one successful tackle (from two attempted), one clearance and one interception.

  1. Sandro Tonali: 49%

A sloppy night for Tonali, who completed just 73% of his passes and only 18% of his forward passes. Won the penalty but didn’t get the assist as Pickford saved Gordon’s effort.

  1. Bruno Guimaraes: 67%

Attempted two shots and played 11 passes into the final third in a bright performance. Chipped in defensively with two successful tackles from three attempts and two interceptions that retained possession.

  1. Joelinton: 56%

Created three chances and attempted four shots but failed to hit the target with any of them. Won just five of his 10 combined ground and aerial duels. A lively but mixed night for Joelinton.

  1. Jacob Murphy: 50%

A pretty ineffective night from Murphy, who failed to create a chance or complete a dribble, while he only attempted one shot.

  1. Anthony Gordon: 38%

Gordon will be playing that penalty miss over and over, with the Everton fans and players making no secret of how much they enjoyed it. That ensured his score would plummet for this match and in reality, it was his only standout moment of the match.

  1. Harvey Barnes: 48%

Like Murphy, Barnes didn’t get much joy, posting zero shots and chances created. Unsuccessful with both his attempted dribbles and one attempted cross.

How do Squawka player ratings work?

Squawka’s new player rating system is completely stats-based. Player scores are based on the numbers they put up across a range of on-ball events, from goals scored to tackles won.

Using extensive research and our expertise, we’ve tailored each score to the player’s position. For example, forwards’ scores are based on metrics such as shots on target, touches in the opposition box and big chances created. Meanwhile, centre-backs are rewarded for winning aerial duels, making blocks, successful long-range passes and so on.
