The Europa League quarter-final first-leg fixtures featured late goals, a red card and some surprising results.
Let’s look at what happened on a thrilling night of action.
Lyon and Manchester United played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in France, leaving the tie wide open ahead of the second leg at Old Trafford next week.
United goalkeeper Andre Onana was at fault for both goals. Lyon took the lead in the 25th minute when Onana was too slow to react to Thiago Almada’s free-kick.
The Red Devils equalised first-half injury-time. Manuel Ugarte’s mistimed volley was deflected home by Leny Yoro – his first goal for the club.
The hosts pushed for the advantage in the second period, with substitute Alexandre Lacazette missing a couple of very presentable chances.
United took the lead with two minutes remaining. Bruno Fernandes produced a sumptuous cross for Joshua Zirkzee to head home past Lucas Perri.
However, another Onana blunder allowed Rayan Cherki to level the tie in stoppage time.
In their first-ever appearance in a European quarter-final, Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt beat Lazio 2-0 at home.
The reigning Eliteserien champions outplayed their Italian opposition, and manager Kjetil Knutsen will feel that his side should have won by more.
The hosts dominated from the first whistle, and only poor finishing kept the scores level at half-time.
The deadlock was broken two minutes after the restart when Ulrik Saltnes finished from 12 yards out following a sweeping move.
The midfielder was at it again with 20 minutes to go, producing a fine dinked finish over Lazio keeper Christos Mandas.
Lazio boss Marco Baroni will want a reaction from his side in the Italian capital next week, and they will need to be at their best to turn the tie around.
Rangers were indebted to goalkeeper Liam Kelly in their 0-0 draw against Athletic Bilbao at Ibrox.
The Scottish side played the majority of the game with 10 men after Robin Propper was dismissed following a last-man tackle on Inaki Williams.
Some heroic defending from the home side kept the scores level.
The big moment of the match came in the 82nd minute when Dujon Sterling handled inside the area to give Bilbao a penalty.
Substitute Alex Berenguer stepped up, but Kelly’s outstretched leg denied him.
Despite their failure to find the breakthrough in Glasgow, Ernesto Valverde’s side will be confident of progressing in the second leg at San Mames next week.
Tottenham Hotspur were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt.
The visitors led inside six minutes. James Maddison was caught in possession, and a brilliant finish from striker Hugo Ekitike capped off Frankfurt’s quick break.
Maddison redeemed himself 20 minutes later, setting up Pedro Porro for the equaliser with a clever cut-back.
Spurs dominated at the start of the second half, and Lucas Bergvall and Rodrigo Bentancur hit the crossbar.
The home side were unable to beat Frankfurt goalkeeper Kaua Santos, who made some superb saves near the end.
The tie is delicately poised ahead of the second leg in Germany next week, and Frankfurt will be looking to get the job done in front of their fans.
