Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is fighting for survival at the club following the humiliating 3-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The Spurs’ defeat marked Man United’s second 3-0 loss at home this season, following the embarrassing performance against bitter rivals Liverpool.

With speculation surrounding Ten Hag’s job safety as well as calls for his dismissal continuing to mount, it appears as if the club leadership may finally be considering parting ways with Ten Hag.

According to Sunday Telegraph correspondent James Ducker, Ten Hag may remain in charge at Old Trafford for two more games at least, however, pressure is mounting on the manager.

“Erik ten Hag will remain in charge for the Porto and Aston Villa games. Focus remains on supporting the manager, his staff and players but little doubt the pressure is building. A big week for the #MUFC manager,” Ducker posted on X.

According to The Athletic’s Talk of the Devils podcast, however, Ten Hag is agonisingly close to the exit door at Old Trafford.

“I think it snapped against Twente the other night,” co-host Andy Mitten declared. “I think that’s when a lot of people thought that this is going nowhere.”

“I feel that he’s [Erik ten Hag] on really thin ice,” Mitten continued. “I get a good sense of what fans are feeling.”

Laurie Whitwell made an interesting insight of his own. “They looked around at the end of last season,” he explained, referring to the search for a potential Ten Hag replacement. “They got close to Thomas Tuchel but they didn’t go down that route.”

Noting that INEOS’s reliance on Ten Hag may be fading, Whitwell mentioned former England manager Gareth Southgate as a potential replacement. Interestingly, Whitwell revealed that the he has regularly raised the topic of Southgate during press conferences to the likes of Dave Brailsford and Dan Ashworth during press conferences.

“Every time, with Dave Brailsworth, Dan Ashworth…every time I’ve asked that question, I’ve been sort of steered away from it, you know? The Gareth Southgate one.”

Despite reports that Ten Hag may have two more games to save his job, it appears as if even victories in these matches would not win him back the support of the United fanbase given the shambolic run of form that the club has endured this season, particularly with many of last season’s performance issues still prevalent on the pitch.
