Enzo Maresca has admitted any team that wants to win games and compete has to work in the right way defensively.

The Blues rounded out their tour of America with a 2-1 defeat to Spanish champions Real Madrid, meaning they won just one of their five games.

Chelsea have looked good going forwards but the issues have been defensively with the Blues looking particularly vulnerable.

Maresca knows Chelsea must improve defensively

Across the five games 12 goals were conceded, with four being shipped in the defeats against both Manchester City and Celtic.

The big concern is the volume of individual mistakes which are still being made and that was a problem that prevalent last season under Mauricio Pochettino.

Chelsea have employed a very high line in a number of the games which has lead to them being caught out with Maresca himself admitting he wants the defensive line to drop four or five metres.

Chelsea have conceded 12 goals in their five pre-season games.

Defensive concerns are nothing new and the Blues conceded a club record number of goals in the Premier League under Pochettino last season.

Maresca admitted after the defeat to Madrid that if Chelsea want to win and compete then they have to work in the right way defensively.

“Any team wants to do something, they want to win games and compete,” he told reporters.

“They have to work in the right way defensively. It’s difficult when you concede one goal or two, always starting behind.

“Today, again, for the first five minutes, we had two clear chances. When you concede and you are 1-0 behind, 2-0 behind, it becomes difficult. But overall, in terms of the things we are doing, we are improving and I’m quite happy.”

Chelsea have one more game against Inter Milan at Stamford Bridge on Sunday before their opening game against Manchester City and Maresca will be desperately hoping for an improved performance defensively.
