Lionesses star sustained ankle issue in dramatic semi-final win over Italy
England are assessing Lauren James’s ankle injury ahead of the Euro 2025 final.
James sustained a knock to her ankle in the first half of Tuesday’s 2-1 extra-time win over Italy in the semi-final.
England head coach Sarina Wiegman took no chances and replaced James with Beth Mead on the right wing at half-time.
Wiegman has made minimal changes to her team throughout tournament n in Switzerland and will be hoping 23-year-old James is fit to feature in the final on Sunday.
England are yet to learn who they will face at Basel’s St. Jakob-Park, with the second semi-final between Germany and Spain taking place in Zurich on Wednesday night.
The full England squad were in recovery on Wednesday, with James being assessed by in-camp FA doctors.
Wiegman was asked about the severity of James’s ankle knock when she spoke in a press conference after the Italy win.
“She hurt her ankle,” the England manager said of the Chelsea attacker.
“I haven’t seen her yet, so I don’t what it looks like over the next couple of days. But we had to take her off.”
Lionesses captain Leah Williamson overcame an ankle injury of her own to train with the squad on Monday and was fit to start against Italy.
Although the Arsenal defender was substituted in the 85th minute, that is believed to have been tactical and the fact she started the game indicated she had shrugged off the injury.
