DR Congo club TP Mazembe crowned best club in Africa at CAF awards | OneFootball

CAF Champions League winning team TP Mazembe have been crowned the Women’s Club of the Year at the CAF awards in Marrakech, Morocco. Les Corbeaux manager Lamia Boumehdi also claimed the Women’s Coach of the Year prize at the CAF awards night.

TP Mazembe have gone from strength to strength this last year. They successfully won the DR Congolese title, secured the Champions League trophy, and won the UNIFFAC tournament.

The CAF has recognised the Lubumbashi-based side as the best women’s team in Africa for 2024. Despite only founding as a club in 2020, the side have won their domestic league three seasons in a row — two of those championships fell under manager Lamia Boumehdi’s reign. The Moroccan was also recognised by the CAF as she was voted Women’s Coach of the Year at the ceremony in Morocco.

Lamia Boumehdi sets a new standard from African coaches

The Moroccan native coach was also the first female manager to win the CAF Champions League earlier this year as her side beat AS FAR as underdogs. The CAF Women’s Champions League has seen four different winners in its history since the inaugural season in 2020. South African outfit Mamelodi Sundowns are the only team to have won the competition twice, a feat that will now surely be in Boumehdi’s sights.

The 41-year-old former international is accustomed to breaking down barriers both internationally and domestically. As a player Boumehdi was the youngest ever player to represent Morocco at just 16 and the youngest player to start all games for Morocco in the African Cup Of Nations in 2000.

Before joining TP Mazembe 2023, the skilled tactician managed Wydad Casablanca for a singular season, before coaching the Morocco U17’s and U20’s teams between 2017 and 2020.
