It is by now an accepted fact that Manchester City will likely bolster their squad in January. They almost have to based on the injury situation and signs of age that are prevalent in Pep Guardiola’s squad. One area of the City squad that does appear to be in dire need of reinforcing is City’s midfield.

A host of midfielders have been linked with potential moves to the world champions of late. One of those is Spanish international Martin Zubimendi. But now a new report gives the impression that Manchester City may hold a trump card in their pursuit of the Real Sociedad midfielder. If that is the case then the Premier League champions must use it to land one of the most coveted midfielders on the market.

Pete O’Rourke has reported for Football Insider that Manchester City could ‘blow Liverpool away’ in the race to sign the Spanish international. Furthermore, O’Rourke reports that Pep Guardiola’s Spanish connection to the midfield could tip the race to sign Zubimendi in City’s favour. Lastly, O’Rourke adds that a decision on Zubimendi moving in January will be down to the midfielder. With a release clause in his contract, he will have the final say if he moves in January or not O’Rourke reports.

Based on Pete O’Rourke’s new report it appears that Manchester City are well-placed in the race to sign Martin Zubimendi. Although it does appear that Arne Slot’s Liverpool side does have an interest in signing the Spanish international.

But if Martin Zubimendi is the man Manchester City want next month they must pull out all of the stops to sign him. It looks like Zubimendi ticks nearly every box required to play in Pep Guardiola’s midfield. Finding a player like that is no easy task in the current market. The world champions can’t afford to sit idly by and let the opportunity to land Zubimendi slip. They must convince him that the Etihad is the place for him to further his career. Based on O’Rourke’s report it does seem that City have every chance of doing so.

It does appear to be desperate times for Manchester City. They have several pressing needs they must address next month. There midfield is almost top of the list. O’Rourke’s report suggests that Pep Guardiola may be City’s trump card in the race to sign Martin Zubimendi. If that is the case they must use it as they bid to strengthen Pep Guardiola’s squad for the second half of the season.
