Sheffield Wednesday forward Jamal Lowe has struggled to make a significant impact at Hillsborough during his debut season, managing just three goals in 24 Championship appearances since joining on a free transfer last summer.

The 30-year-old Jamaican international, who arrived with high expectations after previously impressing at clubs like Portsmouth, Swansea City, and Bournemouth, has failed to cement his place in the Owls' starting lineup and now faces an uncertain future with just one year remaining on his contract.

Challenging Sheffield Wednesday verdict on Jamal Lowe's future at Hillsborough

Football League World's Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit, Patrick McKenna, believes Lowe's first season with the Owls has been disappointing, and questions whether the forward should remain at the club beyond this summer.

"This season was a disappointing one for him with just the three goals and it's kind of a strange one. He managed to keep himself fairly peripheral the whole season with never really getting a real run in the team, and he didn't seem to establish himself enough in games or get involved enough," Patrick told FLW.

"It was almost like there was a lack of application from him for whatever reason, he never managed to get himself going. As I said that is disappointing. I suppose in an ideal world I would probably want to move him on and get in better, but most likely we might have to see how it goes for another season.

"Certainly there is more of a player in there than he showed, so yeah, players can have poor seasons and bounce back, so there is a chance that next season if he stays with us he could improve. So we are going to have to take this chance on him and see what he could do.

"If he is to stay, his goal contributions have to improve and his levels of effort and commitment as well. Next season there will be a chance for him to impress, and he actually takes it."

Before joining the Owls, Lowe had demonstrated better form during his loan spell at Swansea City in the 2023/24 campaign, netting nine times in 35 appearances.

Jamal Lowe will hope to rediscover his previous form to help the Owls next season

When Lowe signed for Wednesday last summer, he made bold claims about the club's promotion prospects, suggesting they could push for the Premier League despite their narrow escape from relegation the previous season.

However, those ambitions haven't translated into the type of performances needed to drive such a campaign.

His Sheffield Wednesday career started promisingly with a goal on his debut against Plymouth Argyle in an emphatic 4-0 victory in August. He also found the net in the League Cup against Grimsby Town, but those early signs of promise failed to develop into consistent performances throughout the season.

Throughout his career, Lowe has shown he can be an effective Championship performer, notably during his time at Swansea City where he scored 14 goals in 51 appearances between 2020-2021. At 30 years old, the forward should still have the ability to contribute significantly at this level if he can rediscover his motivation and sharpness.

With Danny Rohl’s future up in arms, not much is known about the German assessing his squad options ahead of the 2025/26 season, but Lowe faces a crucial pre-season to prove he deserves to remain part of Sheffield Wednesday's plans.
