Atlético Madrid’s victory over Getafe on Wednesday night saw the capital giants officially secure for themselves a place in next season’s Champions League.

And, in the process, Atléti kept alive nothing short of a historic run under the watch of boss Diego Simeone.

After Antoine Griezmann’s hat-trick proved enough to put the aforementioned Getafe to the sword by three goals to nil, 5th-placed Athletic Club can now no longer mathematically catch Atlético in the La Liga standings.

They will in turn be plying their trade in the top tier of European club competition once more in 2024/25.

Incredibly, this marks the 12th season on the spin in which Diego Simeone has guided the Rojiblancos to as much.

To provide some context to this achievement, Atlético had only managed the same on eight occasions in the club’s entire history prior to the arrival of the Argentine.

As per Mundo Deportivo, their 12 consecutive Champions League group stage berths place the Spanish heavyweights in the company of only a small contingent of the continent’s very top clubs.
