Fabrizio Romano’s latest report has brought an update on Thiago Silva, who announced his intention to leave Chelsea this summer when his contract expires.

According to the insider, Fluminense have now presented their long awaited proposal to Silva to seal his return to the club where it all began. That will see the end of his long story in European football – for now. Silva has “several options on the table” and likely no shortage of interesting destinations and projects being presented to him now that his intentions are clear.

A return home has long been considered the most likely outcome, and we don’t see any reason to doubt that now. It’s likely just a question of finances – and the potential temptation of a move to the Middle East.

But there is reason to believe that this is far from the end of the Silva – Chelsea connection.

The ties that bind

The emotion that Silva showed in his departure video was quite clearly real. And we took his promises to return one day seriously too. But there’s also a practical reason that his future will remain intertwined with our for some time.

Both his sons Iago and Isago are in the academy and seem to be progressing well. With a father like Thiago, it’s hard to imagine them not being very talented and hard working. Romano says they “will stay at Chelsea,” regardless of what their dad does.

Of course it’s always a little tricky to tell with the sons of current players – are they actually up to the required level, or are they just being kept on to please their dad? They aren’t old enough for the selection process to really get tough yet, but that comes soon enough.

In any case – anything that keeps Thiago tied to the club is fine by us.
