Liverpool have chosen the heirs to their biggest roles. The next superstars at Anfield.

Liverpool have had a regular problem over the last five years or so. The investment in their youth system has been so fantastic that there's a ridiculous number of genuinely exciting talents.

But they can't all play. In fact, the vast majority will never wear the Reds and those who do likely only get a couple of games.

Jurgen Klopp gave opportunities to an incredible amount in his last season, for instance. How many are still around with a shot at the first-team?

Even Jarell Quansah, who was a regular in that season, has now left the club. Bobby Clark was gone before Arne Slot's first game in charge. Ben Doak, once considered a sure-thing, was sold to Bournemouth last week.

But none of those sales were criticisms of the players. Essentially, Liverpool can't help a player towards his potential if they can't play him. Selling - and getting a buyback clause or a sell-on percentage - becomes the best option quite quickly.

It creates a situation where Liverpool need to choose the players to back. Some of them need to get proper minutes and first-team gametime, with those kids being the ones you back to become superstars.

It's better, after all, to back players with proper development time than to give more limited minutes to a large group. The Reds appear to have realised that - and it means we know who they view as the next superstars.

Liverpool's next stars

The future of Liverpool’s defence? They had a big choice to make this summer as Quansah was very much there as the option.

He was certainly Klopp’s pick - the German backed him as a starting centre-back. Only, Quansah fell out of favour under Slot and never recovered.

Instead, Liverpool have decided to go with Parma’s Giovanni Leoni as the future of their defence. All suggestions are that they view him as an elite option already and it’ll be the 18-year-old Italian who gets regular minutes this season.

Midfield was a tough one, given how many players Liverpool have in that role who could become something. Tyler Morton failed to break in last season and was moved on to Lyon this summer. James McConnell looks like a potential star there but he’s linked with loans away.

Instead, the midfield minutes look to go to Trey Nyoni, who is now a regular on the bench for Liverpool. He’s the one sticking around and the one Slot appears ready to use in midfield.

Up top? That’s an easy one. Doak’s sale guaranteed that Rio Ngumoha is the future there and the young winger you’ll see up top for the Reds this season.

Liverpool are putting their faith in the teenager and rightfully so. He’s been electric in pre-season and it’s Ngumoha who looks destined to be a starting player for the Reds.

Those are unquestionably the three picks from Liverpool and the players they want to give proper minutes to. Others will need to find different ways to impress the Reds and force their way into plans.

For Leoni, Nyoni and Ngumoha, they’ve got the weight of Liverpool behind them. The chosen ones.
