Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes turned down Al-Hilal’s eye-watering offer and will not be moving to the Saudi Pro League, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed.
Fernandes’ future has been the subject of intense speculation over the past few weeks, amidst heavy interest in his signature from Al-Hilal.
Ahead of the Club World Cup, Al-Hilal are understood to be keen on signing a marquee player and they quickly identified Fernandes as their top target.
Despite a miserable 2024/25 season that saw the club finish a lowly 15th place in the Premier League, Fernandes still enjoyed a fantastic campaign, notching an impressive 19 goals and 20 assists across all competitions. He is among the few United players who can walk away with any pride or credit.
Reports suggested that Al-Hilal had offered Fernandes a mega £700,000 per week contract, which he was seriously considering.
Three years in Saudi would have seen the United skipper net a mind-boggling £200m. Al-Hilal were also prepared to offer United £100m to convince them to sell the Portuguese playmaker.
It’s understood Fernandes had a short window to make his mind up before Al-Hilal withdrew their offer and moved on to alternative targets.
A recent report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Fernandes’ family were not convinced that a switch to the Saudi Pro League was the best thing for them and now, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the 30-year-old has decided against moving to the Gulf state.
Romano wrote on X, “EXCLUSIVE: Bruno Fernandes has REJECTED Al Hilal proposal.”
“Despite crazy contract proposal from the Saudi Pro League club, Bruno Fernandes wants to continue playing football in Europe.”
“Man United captain wants to play at top level in Europe. Decision made.”
This has been reiterated by Ben Jacobs, who notes, “BREAKING: Bruno Fernandes has decided to stay at Manchester United despite a massive offer from Al-Hilal as Fabrizio Romano called.”
“Parties held positive talks last week, but Fernandes then deliberated with his family and has opted against the move. Hilal already informed.”
This undoubtedly comes as welcome news to United fans, who were undoubtedly dreading Fernandes’ departure. Turning down that kind of money to stay at United is the ultimate show of loyalty and it will not be forgotten by the Old Trafford faithful.
