VfB Stuttgart are pushing to secure the permanent signing of Arsenal’s Fabio Vieira, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein. The 25-year-old Portuguese midfielder has drawn interest from the Bundesliga outfit following his season-long loan at former club FC Porto. Stuttgart have already approached Arsenal regarding a transfer, with negotiations now underway.
Crucially, Stuttgart’s interest is not for another loan deal — they are exploring a full transfer. With Vieira’s current contract at the Emirates running until 2027, Arsenal are expected to demand a respectable fee. Given the club originally paid up to €40 million for his services in 2022, it’s understood that any deal will have to reflect at least part of that investment.

Fabio Vieira arrived in north London with high expectations, having come through the ranks at Porto and impressed in the Portuguese top flight. However, since joining Arsenal in June 2022 for €35 million plus €5 million in add-ons, he has struggled to make a sustained impact.
In his debut Premier League season, Vieira made 22 appearances, though only three were starts. The 2023/24 campaign followed a similar pattern, with Vieira making just two starts in the Premier League. The lack of game time led to his return to Porto on loan in August 2024, where he enjoyed a far more consistent run, helping them finish third behind Sporting CP and Benfica.
Given Vieira’s limited opportunities and Arsenal’s depth in midfield, a permanent transfer could benefit all parties. Ornstein notes, “An agreement has yet to be reached but talks are ongoing.” With Stuttgart keen and Vieira entering the final two years of his Arsenal deal, the timing may be right to move on.
This transfer could also allow Arsenal to recoup part of their investment and free up squad space, particularly with Mikel Arteta’s side competing on multiple fronts in the 2025/26 season.
During his loan spell at Porto last season, Vieira was a regular starter and played a pivotal role in their campaign. His performances have clearly caught the eye of Stuttgart, who are reportedly confident that a more settled role in Germany could reignite his career.
From an Arsenal fan’s perspective, this news probably won’t come as a major surprise. Vieira’s time at the club has been underwhelming, especially considering the hefty transfer fee and early promise. While technically gifted, he never fully adapted to the Premier League’s pace and physicality, and his minimal starts reflect that.
Loaning him to Porto was the right move, and his solid season back in Portugal was encouraging. However, it also raised the question: if he thrives elsewhere but can’t break into Arsenal’s starting XI, is it time to cut losses? Stuttgart’s interest might be the perfect opportunity for Vieira and the club to part ways amicably.
Selling him now, with two years left on his deal, is a pragmatic choice. Arsenal can reinvest in more suitable squad options or emerging talents. As fans, we always hope signings fulfil their potential, but Vieira simply hasn’t delivered consistently enough.
