David Moyes Highlights Defensive Concerns at Everton

David Moyes has underlined the difficulties Everton are facing as injuries continue to impact his defensive options. With Jarrad Branthwaite, Nathan Patterson, Seamus Coleman and Vitalii Mykolenko all sidelined in the opening weeks of the campaign, the manager is left with limited choices at the back.

Although both Coleman and Mykolenko returned to the starting line-up in Wednesday’s 2-0 Carabao Cup victory over League One side Mansfield at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, the Everton boss is still cautious. That match offered the chance to rotate, yet Moyes chose not to rest James Tarkowski or Michael Keane, his two most senior centre-backs. It was a clear reflection of how stretched the squad remains.

Moyes Voices Concerns

The Everton manager did not hold back when explaining the situation after the midweek win. He said: “We wanted to try and give as many players (as possible) a game. I’ve not got any defenders. I’m very limited to what I can choose defensive-wise.

He went on to add: “It already has changed a lot of my plans because, obviously, we’re without Jarrad and we have been without Myko for, certainly, the first couple of games.

Moyes acknowledged that these issues are not new, reminding everyone that Everton dealt with similar problems at the end of last season. “We had this at the end of last season as well, we’ve had it all through the summer. It’s not as if we’ve necessarily got it better.

He concluded with a note of caution: “We’ve got people back, but others are injured. We’ve just got to make sure that we’re not short again if we can help it, and certainly we were short for the first two games in the Premier League.”

Transfer News and Reinforcements

With the transfer deadline fast approaching, there is growing expectation that Everton may need to act in the market. Moyes’ comments indicate that defensive cover is now a priority. Everton transfer news has linked the club with a number of potential recruits, and while financial constraints remain a consideration, the need for additional bodies at the back is clear.

Bringing in fresh options would not only relieve pressure on Tarkowski and Keane but also allow Everton to manage the workload of returning players like Coleman and Mykolenko. If the squad can find balance, the Toffees will be in a stronger position to navigate the long season ahead.

Outlook for Everton

The immediate concern is ensuring that Everton are not caught short in defence again. Moyes is known for his pragmatism and organisational focus, yet even he accepts that structure cannot be maintained without reliable personnel. Supporters will be watching closely in the final days of the transfer window, eager to see whether reinforcements arrive.

Everton’s defensive frailties have already shaped the early part of the season. How quickly they can address those gaps could determine the tone of the months to come.
