This past Saturday saw Real Madrid being confirmed as the champions of La Liga for the 2023/24 season.

The Merengues’ 3-0 win over Cadiz at the Santiago Bernabeu, followed by Barcelona’s 2-4 defeat to Girona confirmed the coronation of Carlo Ancelotti’s men as the new champions of Spain.

There were no grand celebrations, though, with the dressing room focused on the upcoming UEFA Champions League clash against Bayern Munich.

When will Real Madrid receive the La Liga trophy?

Now, MARCA has brought forward an important update regarding the Spanish Football Federation’s plans to hand Real Madrid the La Liga trophy.

As per the report, Los Blancos will receive the league championship cup in Granada and not at the Santiago Bernabeu, in front of their fans this weekend.

Indeed, Real Madrid will be handed the La Liga trophy on Saturday, 11 May, when they face Granada away at Nuevo Estadio de Los Cármenes – the RFEF has decided.

It means that Real Madrid will lift the league crown 431 kilometres away from their home ground.

It has not yet been decided whether the presentation will take place before or after the match, something that has to be handled tactfully because after that game Granada could be relegated to the second division.

Unprecedented decision

For Real Madrid to receive the trophy on a ground away from their home stadium on a date when they are already champions is unprecedented in La Liga.

To date, all the champions have lifted the title at home, except for the teams that won the title as visitors on away grounds.

Real Madrid will celebrate the league title on Sunday in the streets of Madrid. The players will board an open-top bus and visit the headquarters of the Community of Madrid and the City Hall before ending up at Cibeles.

There will be no party at the Bernabéu, which has concerts all weekend, although the club is confident that the big meeting between fans and players will take place this Wednesday after Real Madrid vs Bayern Munich.

The Merengues are dreaming of reaching the final and turning the night of 8 May into a party to celebrate the league title and the Champions League final.
