Kicker reports that VfL Wolfsburg have reestablished contact with Sheffield Wednesday’s Danny Röhl over their vacant head coaching position. News yesterday that FC Copenhagen’s Jacob Neestrup was no longer in the running for either the Wolfsburg or RB Leipzig head coaching job has shifted the calculus. Röhl is now back in the running at the Bundesliga club.
Kicker previously reported that – in the event that Neestrup said no to Germany’s green company team – Dutchman Paul Simonis would be appointed. It now nevertheless appears as if Neestrup’s unexpected rejected of VfL managing director Peter Christiansen has placed the Wolfsburg front office under pressure.
Simonis is due to begin training camp with his Erdevisie side in just seven days’ time. A transfer fee for the Go Ahead Eagles Deventer coach must be negotiated within a week. Kicker specifically cites “positive and intense” discussions with Röhl over a return to his native country.
Röhl remains under contract with his EFL Championship club through 2027.
