Real Madrid’s 2-0 win over Real Sociedad ensured that the Merengues finished the La Liga season on a high, but it will be remembered for decades to come as the game that marked the end of an era.
It was, after all, Carlo Ancelotti’s final game as the manager of the club while also being Luka Modric’s final game as a player at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium.
Emotions ran high after the game as the Croatian bid adieu to what has been his home for over a decade and the player left the field to one of the most historic applauses ever heard in a stadium.
Needless to say, it is thoroughly deserved for one of the best midfielders in history.
In attendance for Modric’s special night at the Santiago Bernabeu was Croatian National Team manager Zlatko Dalic who spoke to the media after the emotional night.
Speaking on the midfield maestro, the manager had zero doubts that he would sign again for a high-level project as the next step in his career.
“Knowing Luka, he is only interested in one thing, high-level games at a high-level club,” he told Sportske Novosti.
“I would never give up on Luka Modric, regardless of how old he is. But that’s the [Real Madrid] policy. Remember that Casillas, Raul or Sergio Ramos left this club, in a much uglier way than Luka.
“He is truly a top value and character, he helps young players and I would never give him up.”
Speaking on what mattered to Modric and how he would come to his final decision over where to play next, Dalic said,

“He does not want to have privileges or play somewhere just for money. He will go where he will fight for some things, for some trophies.”
The national team manager then went on to speak on how it was a privilege for him to attend Modric’s farewell ceremony at the Bernabeu.
“It was an honor and a privilege to attend such an event. A farewell to a player with the most trophies in Real Madrid’s history – a Croatian, Luka Modric.”
Elaborating on how difficult the day was for the player himself, especially after all that he had won in the white jersey, Dalic said,
“Something magnificent and incredible, a day that was surely very difficult for him. A day full of emotions and stress because every farewell is hard.”
“But when you experience this, such love, such emotions, it’s something unbelievable,” he added.
“It’s not easy for Luka, he’s been through many battles, and he will get through this one too,” he concluded, supporting the player through the difficult moment.
