Coventry City have recently been linked with a move for Maccabi Tel Aviv's Tyrese Asante.

According to TEAMtalk, the centre-back is of great interest to Frank Lampard and Co. as they look to bolster their defence during the final stages of the transfer window.

They aren’t alone in their pursuit of the 23-year-old, with Ipswich Town also rumoured to be in the running for his signature.

The Sky Blues recently made enquiries to gain "fresh information" about his situation, with the defender currently under contract with Maccabi Tel Aviv until 2027.

Football League World’s Coventry City fan pundit, Chris Deez, would be keen to see his club bring Asante to the CBS Arena.

Coventry City backed to complete Tyrese Asante deal

“We've unfortunately backed ourselves into a corner a little bit and ended up in a beggars can't be choosers kind of situation,” stated Chris. “Selling Luis Binks was absolutely fine.

“We made about £500,000 on what we paid for him. It came completely out of the blue though. I don't think we were planning on selling him. There were no rumours or links. It just came out of the blue, and he was gone within a day.

“That has left us with two fit senior centre-backs. Tyrese Asante looks like a good potential signing. We've been linked with him in the past and Lampard seems to have had an interest in him before.

“I’ve been saying for a while that we need some strong Championship experience or somebody from the lower end of the Premier League but then when you look through our team at the moment, I don't think that's really necessary.

“There were doubts about Milan van Ewijk because he didn't have Championship experience and he's been an absolute revelation since he came in. One of our best players for the last couple of seasons. We've spent a good £4 million on Kaine Kesler-Hayden as well, who didn't have tons of experience at this level.

“I'd be all for bringing in Asante. Ipswich are also rumoured to be interested so I really hope we can push this through because we haven’t got much time left in the window. It's squeaky bum time now.

“I'm praying that the sudden interest in Bobby Thomas is just his agent trying to get a new contract for him because I don't see who we can replace him.”

Coventry City need defensive reinforcements

As alluded to by Chris, Lampard and Co. are short in defensive areas, which could be compounded if Bobby Thomas is eventually sold.

Recruiting a new centre-half is therefore crucial for Coventry, as a lack of depth could come back to bite them later down the line.

Injuries are bound to happen over a gruelling 46-match Championship campaign, and failing to act during the final few weeks of the transfer window may have stratospheric consequences for the Sky Blues.

This fearful prospect should push the club into ramping up their pursuit of Asante with a view to getting the defender signed ASAP.
