Coventry City are considering making an offer for the Fulham winger Martial Godo, and he could be a cracking bit of business for Frank Lampard.

With four points from their first two League matches of the season and an EFL Cup win already under their belts, it's been a solid start to the season for Coventry. After missing out on a Premier League place by losing at the last to Sunderland in the play-off semi-finals last year, the Sky Blues have already demonstrated that they're serious about another bid for a place in the top-flight.

Coventry have had one of the Championship's quieter transfer windows so far, with just three new additions having arrived at the CBS Arena. Perhaps the biggest news of their window so far has been the decision of the highly sought-after Jack Rudoni to stay at the club in the face of interest from Southampton. Keeping players of his quality could be vital to them being able to push for promotion again.

But there are still further changes that they could make, and their interest in Godo of Fulham highlights a gap in their personnel that could push them to a different level.

The omens look good for Martial Godo going to Coventry City

Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett has confirmed that Coventry have a serious interest in bringing Godo to the CBS Arena, and his comments that the player is looking for more game time are good omens for this move going ahead.

Godo has not been able to pin down a place in the Fulham first team over his four years with the club, and Coventry could offer him that, as well as the possibility of a serious challenge for a place in next year's Premier League.

Martial Godo certainly seems to fit the bill for what Frank Lampard needs, and he already has EFL experience. He joined Fulham in 2022 from non-league Margate, but has been unable to break into the first team since joining the club, and spent the 2023-24 season on loan in League One with Wigan Athletic, where he made 34 League appearances, scoring four goals and registering five assists, before going back to Fulham, where he made two appearances from the bench in the Premier League last season, as well as two in the FA Cup.

And Godo is a player who could significantly benefit Coventry, too, because if there's one area in which the Sky Blues could do with a little reinforcement this season, it's on the wing. The only true Championship quality wingers that they have at the moment are Tatsuhiro Sakamoto and Ephron Mason-Clark, and that leaves them a little light as wide attacking options for the manager.

As can be seen from the heatmap for his League One season with Wigan during 2023-24, what Godo could offer Frank Lampard is versatility in attacking positions. He was used on both sides of the pitch by Wigan, and the heatmap shows his tendency to cut inside from either side in attacking positions. Fulham only used him on the left in his brief Premier League appearances for them, but the same tendency could be seen there, too. He's quick, skillful and, as a right-footed player whose preferred position is on the left wing, unpredictable. Lampard needs his players to push high, and Godo offers that.

So Godo fits the bill. He impressed at Wigan throughout 2023-24, and his return to Craven Cottage afterward means that he's been training and working in the environment of a Premier League club since then. And at 22-years-old, he makes good business sense, too. If they can get the best out of him and develop him further as a player, he could have significant re-sale value in a couple of years' time.
