Costa Rica, Honduras victorious in first leg of Gold Cup Prelims

MIAMI – The 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup Prelims got underway with first-leg encounters on Friday, as fourteen nations compete for the final seven berths in the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup.
Guadeloupe, Guyana, and Suriname rode their home-field advantage to opening wins. Costa Rica, Honduras, and Trinidad and Tobago earned away victories to help their chances at closing a result in the return leg.
Cuba 1, Trinidad and Tobago 2
Trinidad and Tobago earned a 2-1 win against Cuba at Estadio Antonio Maceo in Santiago, Cuba.
Yasniel Matos found an early opener for Cuba in the 6’, striking with a first-time left-footed shot inside the box to capitalize on an assist from Maikel Reyes.
Isaiah Lee equalized for the Socca Warriors in the 20’ with a finish from close range.
The visitors secured the comeback in the 53’ through Steffen Yeates following a corner kick opportunity. Alvin Jones recorded the assist.
The two sides will meet again for the second leg next Tuesday at Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva, Trinidad and Tobago.
Suriname 1, Martinique 0
Suriname defeated Martinique 1-nil at Dr. Ir. Franklin Essed Stadium in Paramaribo, Suriname.
Gyrano Kerk scored the sole goal in the 52’ to lead the Golden Jaguars to victory, sending the ball to the back of the net with a right-footed finish. Denzel Jubitana delivered the ball into the box.
Gleofilo Vlijter had a chance to extend Suriname’s lead with a penalty in the 66’, but his attempt was wide of the mark.
The teams will play the second leg next Tuesday at Stade Pierre-Aliker in Fort-de-France, Martinique.
Bermuda 3, Honduras 5
Honduras earned a 5-3 win over Bermuda at the National Sports Centre in Devonshire, Bermuda.
Kane Crichlow broke the deadlock in the 1’ to grant the hosts an early lead, heading home a cross from Djair Parfitt-Williams.
Parfitt-Williams doubled the lead for Bermuda in the 44’ following a free-kick delivery into the box.
The visitors then scored four goals in succession in the second half to turn the scoreline around. Romell Quioto struck in the 60’ and 66’, Luis Palma in the 64’ and Julián Martínez in the 89’ to give Honduras the lead.
Zeiko Lewis converted from the penalty spot to shorten the deficit for Bermuda in the 90’+2.
José Pinto scored for Los Catrachos from the edge of the box in the 90’+4 to secure the win.
The second leg is set for next Tuesday at Estadio Nacional Chelato Uclés in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines 1, Jamaica 1
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Jamaica drew 1-1 at Arnos Vale Stadium in Kingstown, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
Oalex Anderson put the hosts ahead in the 65’. Leon Bailey converted from the penalty spot in the 90’+8 for a late equalizer for the Reggae Boyz.
The two will meet again next Tuesday at Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica.
Guadeloupe 1, Nicaragua 0
Guadeloupe earned a 1-nil victory against Nicaragua at Stade Roger Zami in Le Gosier, Guadeloupe.
A header from close range from Florian David in the 17’ was enough to guide the home side to victory.
The second leg between the two nations will be played next Tuesday at the Estadio Nacional de Fútbol in Managua, Nicaragua.
Guyana 3, Guatemala 2
Guyana defeated Guatemala 3-2 at the BFA Technical Centre in Bridgetown, Barbados.
Isaiah Jones gave Guyana the lead in the 9’ to capitalize on a precise through ball from Nathan Moriah-Welsh.
José Martínez leveled the scoring for Guatemala in the 29’ with a left-footed finish inside the penalty area.
Jones struck again in the 36’ and 56’ to reestablish the lead for the home side and seal his hat trick.
José Pinto cut one back for Guatemala from the penalty spot in the 80’.
The second leg is set for next Tuesday at Estadio Cementos Progreso in Guatemala City, Guatemala.
Belize 0, Costa Rica 7
Costa Rica wrapped up the evening with a 7-nil triumph over Belize at FFB Stadium in Belmopan, Belize.
Manfred Ugalde placed Costa Rica in front in the 7’, scoring with a right-footed shot from the center of the box.
Ugalde extended the lead for Los Ticos from the penalty spot in the 36’.
Kenneth Vargas scored from inside the box in the 38’.
Los Ticos further extended their lead in the second half through goals from Jeyland Mitchell in the 65’ and Josimar Alcocer in the 81’, while Álvaro Zamora struck twice in the 70’ and the 88’ to secure a brace.
Costa Rica and Belize will meet again next Tuesday for the second leg of the series at Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica in San Jose, Costa Rica.
