Antonio Conte expects Scott McTominay, Billy Gilmour and other Napoli signings to settle in quickly but is already convinced that the Scottish pair ‘raise the level’ at Napoli.

Both Scotland players joined the Partenopei in the final days of the summer transfer window.

“I’ve had a great impression. They are serious lads who I’ve already known as opponents in the Premier League,” Conte said at a press conference on Friday.

“They raise the level, they bring competition and this must be the path. We must create a competitive team with time, without pre-established starters. We don’t think like a provincial club but as a club with ambition and desire to compete for important things.

“I expect consistency in terms of performance and results,” the coach continued.

“I expect new players to settle in quickly and consistently from the group.”

Napoli will visit Cagliari on Sunday in Serie A Round 4. David Neres is another new signing, could he start for the first time in Sardinia?

“It depends on them [new signings]. On what they prove in training, their approach and commitment,” said Conte.

“It’s not only true for David. It’s about everyone. Everyone is under scrutiny and must give their best to make me struggle. David has contributed in his two appearances as a substitute. I expect him and the other new guys to be immediately involved in our idea, knowing that there is an attacking phase, but also a defensive phase and that we need balance.”

It remains to be seen if McTominay and Gilmour will be immediate starters, especially considering they’ll be fighting for a starting spot with Stanislav Lobotka and André-Frank Zambo Anguissa.

“I can only have a positive view of them. They are strong players with room for improvement,” said Conte.

“I am happy with them. They have given the highest availability. Frank arrived yesterday but trained very well and will do the same today and tomorrow.”
