Manchester City take on Wolves in their opening game of the 2025-26 Premier League campaign at the Molineux Stadium on Saturday evening.
Pep Guardiola’s side are aiming to win a fifth league title in six seasons after recording their lowest points tally in the Premier League under the Spaniard last season (71), when they finished in third place behind Liverpool and Arsenal.
City have made six new first-team signings this summer, with Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki and Rayan Ait-Nouri impressing at the FIFA Club World Cup as well as last week’s 3-0 pre-season win over Palermo in Italy.
Reijnders has been the man of the moment and an early Manchester City fan favourite, impressing in the United States in June before scoring a second-half brace in Italy last week, where he failed to tap to ball into an empty net for a stoppage time hattrick despite rounding the goalkeeper.
City face Tottenham, Manchester United and Arsenal in their first five games of the 2025-26 Premier League campaign, which is likely to provide an early reflection of what we can expect from Guardiola’s side this term.
This will be the first time since 2015 that Manchester City will begin a new season in the absence of Kevin De Bruyne, who like Kyle Walker and Scott Carson, left the club in the summer at the end of his contract to join Napoli.
However, Manchester City will be hopeful that new signing Rayan Cherki can swiftly take over the role of architect-in-chief following a string of eye-catching displays in pre-season, having joined from Lyon in June.
Phil Foden and Rodri returned to full fitness ahead of Saturday’s trip to Wolves, with Josko Gvardiol and Mateo Kovacic still on the sidelines as they recover from injuries. Ederson and Savinho – who have been subject to transfer speculation – were deemed doubtful for the clash by Guardiola this week.
