Commons Sense – Transfer advice to Celtic Board from former player

Former Celtic star Kris Commons admits that he’s surprised that Celtic hasn’t added a few more new signings to the squad as his old club gets ready for the season kicking off on Sunday when St Mirren visit Celtic Park on flag day…

Speaking to The Scottish Sun Commons admits that he’d have liked Celtic to have made more headway in the transfer market by this stage, given the hugely important UEFA Champions League play-off tie that the Hoops must negotiate in a few weeks time. We’ll find out who Celtic will play next week and given our record in these type of matches nothing can be taken for granted.

“I’d have thought they would have made a few more signings by now,” Commons admitted.

“There is still time for that. But in an ideal world they would have got their big transfers done already, and got the players in through the door ahead of the Champions League qualifier, which is arguably the biggest game of the season.

“I know they have had a few bids in for a couple of wingers. But I would have rather seen them make a little bit more headway than that in the transfer market.”

Commons also posted out that delaying deals builds pressure and can end up with Celtic panic buying with disastrous consequences and large sums of money wasted, with his own example costing Celtic £10m in transfer fees plus hefty wages on top.

“Yet that maybe just underlines how difficult it is to get deals done and over the line in the current climate. Where Celtic have fallen foul in previous years is when they have dragged their heels, trying to get deals across the line for a couple of million quid,” the former Celt noted.

“But then they have felt the pressure from the supporters and ended up paying over the odds for certain players. I remember they paid around £10million for Albian Ajeti and Vasilis Barkas one summer. Neither of those guys lasted long, but they were signed in a panic.

“I would never want Celtic to be rash. But they have been forced into corner in years gone by, because of a lack of activity. That happens when clubs go into the last 48 hours of the window with work still to do.

“They end up paying a lot of money for players who clearly aren’t going to make any difference to the squad.”

As Just an Ordinary Bhoy has pointed out this morning there’s now talk of protests on social media and fans arguing amongst themselves over the developing situation at Celtic that really should have been easily avoided.

Hopefully a few decent signings coming in throw the door over the next week or so will turn things around and make everyone more positive for the season ahead. August is a HUGE month for Celtic with the Champions League play-off and vital away Scottish Premiership games at Pittodrie and Ibrox all ahead of the window closing.
