Cole Palmer is of course one of Chelsea’s big leaders now. It’s not his personality, just his sheer quality which means his teammates are always turning to him for inspiration on the pitch.

Palmer on improving Chelsea and their tournament so far

Speaking after his team’s win over Palmeiras in the Club World Cup semi finals, Palmer looked back on an improving tournament display so far, now his team are just two wins from lifting the trophy.

“We are getting used to being here, the climate is a big thing, and the pitches. The more the tournament has gone on, the better we have got,” the midfielder said of his time in the USA so far.

“We’re getting better and better, and hopefully, we can play even better than we did tonight in the semi.”

The Blues have yet to put in a full 90 minute showing, but in the last two rounds they’ve had really good spells which have shown just what they can do when they’re in gear. The return of Moises Caicedo for this next round should help even more.

Cole Palmer strikes from range against Palmeiras.

The attacking midfielder even had a moment to talk about his goal to open the scoring in the game. It was his first from open play since January, incredibly. But in his typical style, he very modestly talked it down:

“I saw some space, I turned,” Palmer said, making it sounds way easier than it was.

“Two defenders came, so I took a touch and blasted it in.”

Even saying he “blasted” it is surely a joke – he couldn’t have stroked it any more softly, really.
