MILANO - Club Chairman Giuseppe Marotta visited the Centro Clinico NeMO in Milano, the centre of the national network that specialises in the treatment of and research into neuromuscular and neurodegenerative diseases such as ALS, SMA and muscular dystrophy, which operates out of the Ospedale Niguarda. Marotta was welcomed by Marco Rasconi, Chairman of the NeMO centres, as well as clinicians, practitioners and patients, including the Snakes, the young Powerchair Football athletes who, like their favourite Club, play in the Nerazzurri colours.
The event had behind it a special source of motivation. At Christmas 2024, Inter decided to get the entire Nerazzurri Family involved in fundraising efforts to make a donation to the care centre. Thanks to this donation, the clinic will be able to purchase the state-of-the-art equipment needed to develop the research centre, for which NeMO has become an internationally renowned care centre.
"This equipment will allow us to collect more biological samples, which are essential to understanding the biochemical and metabolic aspects of these diseases," explained Dr Valeria Sansone, Clinical Director at NeMO. The priority for clinicians and researchers is, in fact, collecting and analysing as much data as possible, necessary to reconstruct the natural history of these rare and complex diseases, for which we are working on a cure. In 2024 alone, 55 clinical studies were carried out by the Clinical Research Center Nanni Anselmi at NeMO Milano. 29 of these studies were interventional trials of new drug treatments, 23 were observational studies and 3 were ‘expanded’ access programmes (EAP) for compassionate drugs, specifically designed for rare and serious diseases.
It was a special and precious day for everyone involved in this emotionally charged meeting. "At the NeMO Centers, we are committed to working with team spirit and the confidence that we can go further, challenging what only a few years ago seemed impossible regarding these illnesses. For this, I want to sincerely thank Inter and President Marotta. The concrete support for research is the most beautiful message of hope and confidence for our community". These were the words of NeMO Center Chairman Marco Rasconi.
