Borussia Dortmund have emerged as the latest suitor for Manchester City’s Claudio Echeverri, according to new reports from German media.
The 19-year-old midfielder only arrived at the Etihad Stadium in January, completing his move from River Plate before immediately being introduced to Pep Guardiola’s wider first-team squad.
Echeverri featured in last season’s FA Cup Final and also made appearances in the Premier League, underlining City’s faith in his long-term potential. However, despite promising moments, it has long been expected that the Argentine will require a loan move to secure consistent senior minutes.
City’s policy with high-profile teenage arrivals has been clear in recent years; integrate them in the first-team environment before sending them out to gain competitive experience. James McAtee, for example, was given spells in the Championship and Premier League before City sanctioned a permanent exit to Nottingham Forest this summer.
Elsewhere, Sverre Nypan is currently finalising his own loan to Middlesbrough. The approach ensures that the club retain full control of a player’s pathway, with regular reports sent back from loan clubs to Etihad Stadium officials.
Claudio Echeverri’s situation is made more complex by the fact that City Football Group have Girona as an alternative pathway. The Catalan club have high hopes in La Liga and have proven themselves to be a valuable development ground for City youngsters, most recently with the likes of Savinho.
However, now according to the information of Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg and Patrick Berger, Borussia Dortmund have submitted an offer to Manchester City for Argentine playmaker Claudio Echeverri.
The German side are reportedly pushing for an initial loan deal with a buy option for the 19-year-old, who has ‘several’ options currently on the table.
For the time being, it is further reported that it remains unclear whether Manchester City would agree to include a buy option in any deal for Echeverri, with fellow City Football Group side Girona also a possibility this summer.
Looking ahead, if City reject Dortmund’s buy-option clause, it would signal a clear intention to retain long-term control of Claudio Echeverri’s future. A Girona loan would fit the club’s usual model, allowing the teenager to remain within the CFG framework.
However, a move to Borussia Dortmund could offer him the unique chance to follow in the footsteps of Jadon Sancho, Jamie Bynoe-Gittens and Jude Bellingham, who both used the Bundesliga side as a springboard to the European elite.
The coming weeks could prove decisive, with City weighing the benefits of keeping Echeverri within CFG against the high-level exposure that Borussia Dortmund can offer. For now, it seems certain that the Argentine playmaker will spend the 2025/26 season away from the Etihad Stadium, with the club carefully plotting the next stage in his progression.
