The number one scapegoats at Chelsea right now are the sporting directors. Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart are the focus of a load of fan criticism as the club’s vast spending continues to fail to deliver consistent results on the pitch.

This was a major topic on TalkSport’s Chelsea show last night.

Asked about the frustrations growing about the lack of progress after years of heavy spending, former Chelsea player Jason Cundy avoided being too critical, but his meaning was clear.

“The club have deliberately gone down a route where you’re buying potential… We’re buying some exceptional young talent, but at the moment that hasn’t been realised. And that, I think is still a problem in the squad. We will only know in three or four years time if this recruitment policy has bene a huge success, or, actually, been a bit of a nightmare. I can’t make that call just yet. But I don’t see them changing the recruitment policy anytime soon.”

Morris makes common criticism of Chelsea’s transfer policy

Jody Morris backed him up with an even more pertinent point:

“Sometimes the best way to realise potential is to put experience next to it. It’s not to flood the team with just potential. The best way to realise that potential is to be supportive and enhancing it with character and experience, not just on the pitch but day in day out at the training ground.”

That’s a sure sign that the sporting directors have made mistakes, by “flooding” the team with callow youth, as Morris puts it, and letting the older heads go all at once.

He added that the fact that Trevoh Chalobah had been recalled was a sign that the sporting directors were “holding their hands up” and saying “we made a mistake.”
