Blues Saved by Rare Rule as Title Bid Stumbles on Day One
Chelsea’s Premier League Start Ends in Frustration After VAR Drama
Chelsea’s Premier League campaign began with frustration as the world champions were held to 0 - 0 draw by Crystal Palace on Sunday.
The Blues narrowly escaped defeat when Eberechi Eze’s free kick found the net, only for VAR to intervene.
A rarely enforced rule came into play with Palace defender Marc Guehi standing less than 1 metre from the defensive wall leading to the goal being disallowed.
Patrick Vieira’s side carried their momentum from last season having beaten Man City in the FA cup final and edged Liverpool on penalties in the Community Shield.
Now they frustrated Chelsea who despite heavy summer investment delivered lackluster display.
The stalemate sees Chelsea lose 2 valuable point in the opening round while rivals Liverpool, Man City and Arsenal all started with victories. Pressure will now mount on Mauricio Pochettino to find solutions quickly if the Blues want to keep pace in the title race.
