Chelsea – and their under-fire boss Graham Potter – are in dire need of goals right now.

Currently sat in 10th position in the Premier League table, the Blues need an incredibly strong finish to the season if they are to have any chance of qualifying for Europe next season.

With that in mind, Chelsea recently bolstered their attacking ranks by forking out a massive £9 million to loan Atletico Madrid forward, Joao Felix, until the end of the season.

Per the Daily Mail, that hefty investment works out at £714,286 per Premier League game when you consider Felix’s salary of £6m, which the west London club will also cover.

The 23-year-old looked bright enough on his Chelsea debut against Fulham on Thursday, but was later sent off for a reckless lunging tackle on Kenny Tete in the second half.

That lapse in judgement will see him suspended for three Premier League matches, essentially costing Chelsea £2.1m in the process.

Not the start to life at Stamford Bridge that Felix would have wanted! Chelsea fans, though are sadly used to disappointment when it comes to the arrival of high-profile attackers.

In recognition of the Portuguese superstar’s move to the Premier League, the team over at FourFourTwo recently ranked the 12 worst Chelsea strikers of the Premier League era.

You can check out their countdown – which includes a number of big-money loan deals that didn’t go to plan – below.

Who are Chelsea’s worst strikers of the Premier League era?

12. Kai Havertz

FourFourTwo admit that it’s harsh to include Havertz on this list given that he’s not really a striker.

However, faced with a ridiculously long injury list, Potter has been forced to use the German in the No. 9 role in recent weeks – and it hasn’t been a success.

11. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Brought in on a two-year contract from Barcelona at the request of former boss Thomas Tuchel, Aubameyang has managed just one Premier League goal since his arrival back in September.

The Gabonese frontman also appears to have fallen out with Potter, meaning it’s questionable as to whether he’ll add to that tally.

10. Alvaro Morata

Moved to Chelsea in a £58m deal at the start of the 2017/18 season. The fact that he picked up more yellow cards than goals during the second half of his debut season tells you plenty about how his Blues career went.

Managed only 16 Premier League goals for the club before being shipped out to Atletico Madrid on an 18-month loan deal.

9. Gonzalo Higuain

Came in on loan from Juventus in January 2019. Scored just five goals in 19 games. Unsurprisingly, Chelsea passed on the chance to sign him permanently for £31.4m.

8. Alexandre Pato

Another loan deal that didn’t pan out. The Brazilian played only twice in 2016 before the club decided he wasn’t up to the required standard.

7. Fernando Torres

A £50m signing from Liverpool on transfer deadline day in January 2011, Torres failed to score in any of his first 13 games for the club.

His confidence – and form – never really returned. The Spaniard notched only 20 Premier League goals in 110 outings for Chelsea.

6. Mateja Kezman

Scored 78 goals in two seasons for PSV. Managed just seven in his sole campaign at Stamford Bridge.

5. Romelu Lukaku

Chelsea forked out £97.5m to re-sign Lukaku from Inter Milan in August 2021. He never got to grips with Thomas Tuchel’s system and scored just eight goals in the Premier League across the 2021/22 season.

It only took the Belgian powerhouse a matter of months to campaign for a return to the San Siro, which he was granted back in the summer when the Blues agreed a loan deal with the Serie A side.

4. Adrian Mutu

In 27 Premier League appearances, Mutu had found the net on just six occasions when Chelsea sacked him in September 2004 after he failed a drugs test for cocaine.

The club later successfully sued the player for the £15.8m transfer fee that they paid Fiorentina for him, but they don’t appear to have ever received that money.

3. Radamel Falcao

Chelsea paid £4m to secure Falcao’s services on a year-long loan deal in July 2015. The Colombian striker scored just one goal for the club during his spell with them – in a defeat to Crystal Palace.

Overall, Jose Mourinho’s side lost six of the 12 games that Falcao appeared in.

2. Chris Sutton

The west London club spent a small fortune by the standards of 1999 when they parted with £10m to secure the services of Sutton from Blackburn.

In 28 Premier League games, he contributed just one goal. It should come as no surprise that he was swiftly moved on to Celtic at a £4m loss.

1. Andriy Shevchenko

Roman Abramovich was delighted when he finally landed the legendary Ukrainian striker from AC Milan in 2006 for £30m.

Unfortunately for all associated with the club, Shevchenko was very much on the decline by the time he arrived in west London and was a shadow of the player that had won the Ballon d’Or just two years earlier.

In total, Shevchenko scored just 23 goals in 77 appearances for Chelsea and rightly goes down as one of their most disappointing signings of the last few decades.
