Kendry Paez is still mainly known by Chelsea fans and those with an eye on South American football, but that’s changing rapidly.
He’s now a regular starter for his country, and in Ecuador’s 0-0 draw with Colombia last night he had the honour of changing shirts at full time with the icon of Colombian football that is James Rodriguez.
James was once the sparkling wonderkid as Paez is now – although even James didn’t break through and look as good at 16 as the Ecuadorian.
It felt like something of a passing of the torch, as one player’s career winds down after years of being a leader for his country and impressing at the very top of European football, another player is on his way up internationally and about to make his big jump across the Atlantic.
Let’s hope that Kendy can find the consistency over the course of many years that James never quite could.
