Chelsea have seen a second bid for Jamie Gittens rejected by Borussia Dortmund ahead of Tuesday’s transfer deadline.
It’s the latest setback in this window for the Blues, who have been stymied in their attempts to bolster their ranks with a number of new signings ahead of the Fifa Club World Cup.
Their pursuit of AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan has been halted after they refused to pay more than £12.6 million (€15m), while Hugo Ekitike will stay put at Eintracht Frankfurt for now, although talks will continue into the summer.
Chelsea tabled a fresh offer of around €50m (£42m) to sign Gittens, but it has been knocked back by Dortmund, according to Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg.
It is said that “negotiations are ongoing”, but BVB now want €65m (£55m) for the 20-year-old.
Sky Sports News report that Chelsea have not given up on trying to complete a deal before the deadline so that they can register the player in time for the Club World Cup.
It’s believed that Gittens has told Dortmund wants to move to Stamford Bridge and was hoping to play for the Premier League club in the newly-created tournament.
Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl was scheduled to have a media session on Tuesday afternoon, but it has been cancelled.
Gittens was present at the club’s headquarters for training and partook in some running during the session.
The England U21 international briefly spent time at Chelsea’s academy, but remained with Reading until joining Manchester City at under-14 level. He went on to sign for Dortmund in 2020.
