Santos prodigy Angelo Gabriel is close to joining Premier League powerhouse Chelsea after Barcelona failed to take up the preferential purchase option.

Despite reaching a verbal agreement with the Brazilian outfit over the 18-year-old’s switch to Spotify Camp Nou last winter, the Spaniards have been unable to adhere to the terms.

Strapped for cash amid the club’s frustrating battle with Financial Fair Play rules, Barcelona will miss out on Gabriel’s signature after Chelsea agreed to pay €15 million for him, according to Sport.

The left-winger was one step away from signing for Nottingham Forest in January when the newly-crowned La Liga champions hijacked the Tricky Trees’ move for the Brazilian starlet.

However, Gabriel’s future will be in the Premier League by the looks of things as Barca pulled out of the race to lock down his signature, allowing Chelsea to swoop in and steal him away.

After acquiring the services of Andrey Santos from Vasco da Gama and Kendry Paez from Independiente del Valle last January, the Blues are set to continue their shopping spree in South America.

But while they could soon complete Gabriel’s signing, the youngster is unlikely to spend next season at Stamford Bridge, with the English club looking to send him to a ‘satellite’ club to gain experience.

Gabriel came through the ranks at the Peixe academy before signing his first professional deal with Santos in October 2020 at 16 years old.

He had two wait for two more days to make his senior breakthrough for Paulo Turra’s team, coming on as a second-half substitute against Fluminense to become the second-youngest player to debut for Santos.

The quicksilver forward has become a regular starter this season, tallying 12 league appearances and chipping in with two goals.

Despite his young age, Gabriel has also performed for Santos on the continental stage, clocking five Copa Sudamericana outings this term.

He also has eight Copa Libertadores matches under his belt from his maiden senior season at Santos.
