Levi Colwill was fantastic for the Terriers in 2021/22, but his season ended with a dramatic moment.

Huddersfield Town's 2021/22 season seems like a far cry from their current position after the Terriers were relegated from the Championship at the end of the last campaign.

Under the guidance of Carlos Corberan, Huddersfield started excellently and found themselves in the play-off places after just five matches.

Over the course of the next few months, the West Yorkshire club dropped only as low as 11th in the second tier, before a late drive up the table in the final quarter of the season saw them come close to the automatic promotion spots.

Corberan built his Terriers team off the basis of having a strong defence, and the loan signing of Levi Colwill from Chelsea was the perfect addition to promote his style of football, with the then 19-year-old making 29 appearances in the Championship.

However, his time at the John Smith's Stadium may be remembered for the wrong reasons by some supporters given its disappointing conclusion.

Colwill suffered fitness issues but was excellent when he played

Colwill came immediately into the fold with the Terriers after joining in June 2021, starting in eight of their opening nine league games.

But, this was when the first of his injury problems started, with the 19-year-old missing games against Blackburn Rovers and Luton Town.

Nevertheless, he re-entered the fray, and became a key part of the starting XI for the coming months, as Huddersfield bounced between being in and out of the play-off places.

Things started to go extremely well for Colwill, but issues surrounding his fitness continued, and the centre-back even contracted Covid-19 at one point in the season.

He did not let these setbacks stop him from having an impact on the team, as he picked up two goals from defence against Sheffield United and Birmingham City.

Despite a knee injury keeping him out of the team throughout the majority of January and into February 2022, he returned with aplomb, helping his club into the play-offs.

Huddersfield finished 3rd in the Championship in 2021/22, six points behind AFC Bournemouth, and eight behind league winners Fulham - giving them a chance at promotion through the play-offs.

Colwill and Huddersfield's play-off campaign ended in heartbreak

After such a successful campaign in the regular season, Huddersfield went into the play-offs with full confidence.

Colwill sat out in the first leg of the competition, watching on from the bench as the Terriers drew 1-1 away to Luton.

In the second leg at the John Smith's Stadium, Corberan's team battled their way to a 1-0 victory, taking them through to the final at Wembley. Jordan Rhodes' goal eight minutes from time was the difference between the two sides, with the home team going on to face Nottingham Forest.

It was the tie that most expected to happen after the Championship campaign had ended, with both Forest and Huddersfield the two stand-outs from the sides that made the play-offs.

In what was an extremely tight affair between the two at the Home of Football, a moment of pure luck saw the East Midlands club score the only goal of the game. Unfortunately for Colwill, it was his touch that saw Forest to the Premier League after he inadvertently sent the ball into the back of the net from James Garner's cross.

Colwill's touch was a small blight that proved to have huge consequences on an impressive season, and he has since gone on to become a regular for Chelsea and has picked up three caps for England. But there will always be the question of what if the ball flew over the bar on that day in 2022?

Indeed, many supporters may still find it tough to remember the good of the Blues loanee's spell given its disappointing ending.
